.. Amie Street Player --Some songwriters are the sum of their influences; Rick Jones strives to always be that and then a little more. Music comes as naturally to him as breathing. Like so many other great singers he was raised in a musically supportive family who encouraged him to perform both at church and in area talent contests. A native of once semi-rural Olive Branch, Mississippi, Rick moved across the stateline to Memphis, Tennessee after high school. While working through college at University of Memphis(as an employee of U.P.S. and part-time welder) he took the time to book a few shows in area coffee shops, most notably Java Cabana(home of the Elvis Wedding Chapel). After an attempt at settling down to the married life that didn't work out so well, Rick decided to pull up roots and head to Nashville to make a serious effort to enter the music business. It was in Nashville that he composed the majority of the songs found on the debut album "Sea Threw Me", available online at amiestreet.com . After a few years of concentrated effort, making the rounds of open mics and dive bars and cafes, Rick got a little frustrated, and went back to teaching full time. But the music was a hard habit to shake and after a couple of years he was ready to get back in the game. Now he divides his time between Nashville and New York City, where he plays as a duo with drummer Mike James, whose deft percussion skills enhance the dynamic nature of Rick's songs. Always a crowd pleaser, Rick's baritone vocals project his simple yet literate lyrics through noisy barrooms and crowded cafes, without losing the intimacy of a back porch picking party. Plans for a new album are in the works, as Rick currently weighs the ecological impact of a hard copy cd release of "Sea Threw Me". He hopes to build a wider fan base that would allow for more touring and a chance to meet new people in new places. In a changing industry, Rick Jones is comfortable with the increased independance available to artists and sees it as an opportunity to rebuild the foundations of the music world. "A songwriter's job is just to go out and tell people the truth about the world you see as honestly as you can. As a performer, though, you add an element of theater, or shamanism, that leads the audience through your experience..." he says. Rick does that job with a true working man's ethic.
