Violence is a way with words - Bitter Man

About Me

'Songs [...] from another time and place' - Sandman Magazine'Acoustic twiddles, lyrics with an edge and an emotive voice to carry them... Circus Town, Pictures of Paris and World Detached show that Sam is a really good songwriter who gets me anticipating the next song...' - Gareth Howells, www.myspace.com/negnec'We have a lot of performers through our doors and Sam definitely stands out as one of the "best amongst the best"' - The Redhouse, Sheffield'Portsmouth's answer to Tracy Chapman' - Nick Courtney
'A one man duet' - www.open-space.org.ukSam Browse would like to describe his music as philosophical but feels that would be a bit too pretentious. He writes songs because he wishes he were a poet, but doesn't really know what good poetry is (despite his undergraduate studies). Songs are also a way of being opinionated that people don't hate you for; anger is so much more palatable when it's put to a tune.

Sam gets annoyed easily, especially by people who don't think about anything. Despite this, going to see one of his shows is more fun than a trip to the zoo... with cake.

NB: Sam is also registered on www.reverbnation.com/sambrowse and www.purevolume.com/sambrowse. He plays frequently with the band, A Magic Bullet and Pocket Satellite vocalist, Maya Zosmer (see 'top friends').

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: purevolume.com/sambrowse
Band Members: Live, it's usually Sam and his guitar, which is a slightly battered 000 Blueridge historic model with Snake II pickup and new Schaller machines.

Sam also plays a Tanglewood acoustic bass on Morpheus and Not America, and a home made electric guitar on What to Say that's based (very) roughly on a Gibson Les Paul.

With 'A Magic Bullet' he plays an Epiphone mandolin with a transplanted Gibson back.

Not America is a song Sam plays with 'A Magic Bullet' and features:

Sam Browse - Lead vocal, guitars and acoustic bass

Rob Butler - Harmony vocal and guitars

Jen Tomkinson - Harmony vocal and congas

Occasionally Sam plays with Tim Hodkinson (cajon) and Maya Zosmer (vocals) of the band 'Pocket Satellite' (check them out; they're in Sam's 'top friends').

Influences: Bob Dylan, John Martyn (and also his work with Beverly Martyn), Roy Bailey, Jean-Paul Sartre, Steve Knightley, Phil Beer, Jacques Lacan, Show of Hands (perhaps obviously), Kate Rusby, Sufjan Stevens, Michel Foucault, Ani DiFranco, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, The Band, Jean-Francois Lyotard, Robbie Robertson, Eric Clapton, BB King, Karl Marx, John Scofield, Fairport Convention, Richard Thompson, Nick Drake, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, Lightning Hopkins, Al Stewart, Mark Knopfler, Roy Harper Tracy Chapman Jean Baudrillard ..... there's lots.
Sounds Like: Numerous people, but not exactly like any of them.
Type of Label: None
