About Me
"She (Louise Brooks) did copy my haircut, I was very flattered."
"My life was very busy. Oh, I may have said, 'There's another little girl copying my hair', but then remember, thousands of kids cut their hair like mine!"
"A 15 year old beginner in those first few years of motion pictures was likely to become a star by eighteen or nineteen. She was also likely to become a has-been by 22 unless she took extremely good care of her complexion or... the cameraman obliged by keeping a discreet distance away."
After seeing my first play at age five, I knew I wanted to be a movie star just like my idols Mary Pickford and Margueriet Clark. Luckly, my uncle had close ties with D.W. Griffith, the first great movie director, and by 1916, he was able to convince Mr. Griffith to give me a contract with First National Movie Studio. Soon after that lucky stint, I moved to Hollywood with my grandmother, and changed my name from Kathleen Morrison to "Colleen Moore". Many people don't know, but I actually have one blue eye and one brown... but thanks to black and white photography and film, it didn't quite show up. I'm often considered the first "flapper" thanks to my role in Flaming Youth (1923) which unforunately, at this time is presumed LOST!
I'm undeniably the reigning box office star of 1926-1927- even bigger than Chaplin, Pickford, or Swanson. At this time, I recieved over 10,000 fan mail letters a week and a nice weekly paycheck of 12,500! I've had the wonderful opportunity to work with such fine actors as John Barrymore, Charles Chaplin, John Gilbert, and Gary Cooper. I continued to make movies into the 30's (oh, those dreaded TALKIES, but thankfully my voice recorded well!) but soon longed to live a "normal" life and moved to Chicago. I can be seen in over 60 films spanning my career. As a hobby, I decided to build the grandest doll house ever, "The Enchanted Castle." I designed it, and worked with hundreds of craftsmen over the course of a decade, and completed it at the cost of some $500,000. It is said to be seen by over 1.2 millon people a year and is on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. I've also writen several children's books and two books on how to manange and invest money. I've been married 4 times and my last took place at age 81! (They just couldn't keep up with me, so I got rid of um!)
