[email protected] History of Guns n Roses
The Story Of Guns N Roses starts in mid 80's Los Angeles, a time were hair metal ruled the scene, in the days were the biggest bands in rock included Van Halen and Poison. What Guns N Roses gave to the rock music scene though was not hair metal but their own style which eventually gain them the tittle most dangerous band in the world.
The seads were sown for Guns N Roses to form in 1985 after W.Axl.Rose formed Hollywood Rose with Tracii Guns and long time childhood friend Izzy Stradlin on guitar, Ole Beich on bass and Rob Gardener on drums. This band evntually became known as the L.A Guns and then Guns N Roses as they are known today. Soon, Beich was replaced on bass by Duff McKagan with Rob Gardener and Tracii Guns being replaced by Slash on lead guitar and Steven Adler on drums.
This line up of Guns N Roses became suceesful on the L.A club scene with Guns n Roses playing many of the local famous clubs such as The Roxy and The Whiskey. In late 1985, Guns N Roses released 10000 copies of the e.p Live?!*@ Like A Suicide on the UZI Suicide Label. In 1986, Guns N Roses continued to tour small venues around L.A. They planned to go on a small american tour but cancelled after their van broke down on the way to the first venue causing them to cancel the rest of the tour after playing only one gig. Here is some footage of Guns N Roses Playing the Roxy in L.A in 1986. .. width="425" height="350" .. Eventually though, Guns N Roses were discovered by geffen A&R man Tom Zutaut after they played a show at The Troubadour. After the band recived $75000 dollars in advanced the deal was done. Sonn after the band was signed to geffen, the Live?!*@ Like A Suicide e.p was re-released and Guns N Roses started work on their debut album Appetite For Destruction.
Guns N Roses also became quite succesful in other countries such as Britain after playing London's Marquee club. Many songs from that performance were released as b-sides to other songs from their debut. Appetite For Destruction was released in the USA in late July 1987. The first song to be realesed from the album was what would become one of Guns N Roses' biggest anthems welcome to the jungle. The video became a major hit on MTV after Geffen record label boss David Geffen asked MTV to play it. Even though the video had been shown at two in the morning, it soon became the most requested video on the channel. However, this did not boost the album sales as many people objected to Appetite's original album cover(an image of a robot raping a girl). This was soon changed to an image of the band as skulls on a cross.
In 1988, Guns N Roses released many more songs from appetite including Sweet Child O' Mine which reached number one in the USA. This swung appetite's sales into the millions(to date it has sold 20 million copies, is the fourth best selling album of the 80's and the biggest selling debut of all time). However, with great sucess comes huge tragedy. When Guns N Roses played the Donnington monsters of rock festival on August 22nd of that year, two fans were crushed to death during Guns N Roses' performance, despite the fact that Guns N Roses Stoped their set three times in order to keep the audience calm. The band did not find out until after the the festival had finished about that tragic event.
In late 1988, Guns N Roses relased mini album GNR Lies, which contained four tracks which were featured on the Live?!*@ Like a suicide e.p and four new acoustic tracks including the top five hit patience and the contorverisial One In A Million. This song contained both racist and homophobic lyrics. Axl however said that what he was being accused of was untrue as Slash is half black and that he was a fan of gay singers such as Freddie Mercury and Elton John. Even after Axl had said this, Guns N Roses were kicked off the line up for an AIDS benifit concert in new york. This didn't stop the albums sucess as it got into the into the top five along with Appetite For Destruction.
In 1989, the band started to write and record songs for their new album. At a Rolling Stones concert, were Guns N Roses the opening act, Axl said onstage that a certain member of the band should stop dancing with Mr Brownstone and that it might be his last performance with the band. This was directly pointed at slash whom along with other members of the band had serious drug and alcohol problems. All of the band said that they would clean up.
In 1990, Guns N Roses continued recording for what would become the Use Your Illusion albums. However this was still ridden with problems as even though the rest of the band had cleaned up their drug habbits, drummer Steven Adler still hadn't. Unfortunatly, this left his bandmates no choice but to fire him. He was replaced by Cult drummer Matt Sorum. On the same day that he made his debut as the drummer, Guns N Roses also intoduced keyboard player Dizzy Reed.
During 1991, Guns N Roses set of on their Use Your Illusion tour starting in north America. In July 1991, a riot started in ST.Louis after Axl jumped into the croud in an atempt to remove a camera from a fan after asking security to remove it several times. On september 17th, the Use Your Illusion albums were both released arounf to world, both getting to number one and two in several countries, including the U.S and the U.K. Both albums have sold seven million copies in the USA alone. Several days after the albums were released, it was announced that Izzy would be leaving the band. He was replaced by L.A guitarist Gilby Clarke.
In 1992, Guns N Roses continued to tour the world. On April 20th, they made an apperence at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert at Wembely Stadim, London. They performed two songs, with Axl later dueting with Elton John on Bohemian Rhapsody. Here is some footage of it. .. width="425" height="350" ..
Guns N Roses also joined Metallica on a small tour across America. Another riot also sparked on this tour as Metallica vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield burned his arm in a pyrotecnics incident causing Metallica to cancel the rest of their set but promising to do another show in the city. Guns N Roses lest the stage after Axl said he had vocal problems causing an already restless audience to riot.Guns N Roses won several awards that year including MTV Best Cinematography for November Rain. At the MTV award, it is also been reported that Axl told Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain to "shut your bitch up" after Courtney Love asked Axl sarcasticly if he wanted to become their daughters god father. Axl Rose and Kurt Cobain never made up.
1993 came and Guns N Roses continued to tour. In May, Gilby injured his hand, causing Izzy to return for 5 shows. The tour ended on July 17th, in Argentina after lasting 28 months, being seen by seven million people at nearly two hundred shows in 27 countries. Later that year, a punk cover album, The spagetti Incident was released. Unlike previous albums, it did not sell as well.
In 1994, Gilby was sacked from the band after a dispute with Axl. He was replaced by Paul Huge, much to the annoyance of Slash as he recorded over his solos on Sympathy For The Devil. Eventually, Slash left in October 1996 after not agreeing with Axl's musical direction. Slash was to be replaced by Robin Finik. Soon after, Matt Sorum left after an argument with Axl about Slash and Duff left in late 1997. Axl was now the only orginal member of the group left.
It was in 1999 that the next Guns N Roses song Oh My God was released with Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro playing the solo on it. In a bid to get record sales back up, Geffen released Live Era with recordings from different Guns N Roses tours.
The following year Guns N Roses played the Rock In Rio festival and two shows in Las Vegas. Guns N Roses then made a suprise apperenece at the 2002 MTV awards with Axl on vocals, Buckethead and Richard Fortus on guitar, Tommy Stinson on bass, Brian Mantia on Drums, Dizzy on keyboards and effects man Chris Pitman. Guns N Roses attempted to an American tour, however this was cancelled. During 2004, they were due to play Rock In Rio but had to drop out due to Bucketheads departure. Geffen, now tired Guns N Roses not producing any new material for release, pushed forward a Guns N Roses greatest hits album. Many people however did not like track listing but this didn't stop it from getting to number one in the UK and number three in the USA. To date it has sold over three million copies.
It was in 2006 that the ball started rolling again for Guns N Roses. Axl was spotted at a KoRn pre-tour party in early January and said that,"people will hear music this year". In February some new tracks were leaked onto the internet. It was also announced that month that Guns N Roses would be headlining the Download festival in UK and Rock In Rio in Portugal. Four warm up dates were announced for New York's Hammerstein Ballroom. In late May a European tour was announced for July/August time.
It is now 16 years since what is often considered as the classic line up of Guns N Roses was changed. From some young punks from L.A who just wanted to write music to the biggest band in the world, to a legend in the world of rock, Guns N Roses changed music forever. Many today still hope they reform even though the modern line up has had some sucess. For some it seems impossible but for others its someting that is going to happen very soon.
