I will sample a piano, but then play an original riff with that sample. I will sample a snare drum, but create an original arrangement and placement. I will use a synthetic tone for a melody that I wrote and composed myself. It takes me a long time to do complete instrumentals in this way, because I'm not simply cutting and pasting riffs and melodies and drum patterns (that were produced by multiple 'other' producers) together into my own 'unique' song.
