The Hola is an experimental music ensemble founded by Ignacio Agrimbau in 2005, and a great number of musicians has worked with us as main members as well as collaborators. Previous versions of the ensemble have included John Habron, Richard Thomas (Now), Ed Hicks (Drums of Death), James Weeks (Exaudi, Kurbis), and Sophie Appleton (Exaudi, Kurbis).
Current and former collaborators include former main members as well as Michael Finnissy, Juliet Fraser (Exaudi, Kurbis), Seth Cooke (Hunting Lodge, Defibrillators), Emma Richardson (Band of Skulls), Claudia Molitor, Sam Cave, Niall Mason, CoMA South, CoMA Sussex, Antonio Cascelli, and Tom Green.
Our music has in the past made extensive use of extended notation techniques, collaborative composition, improvisation, sound poetry-declamation and extended vocal techniques. The stylistic sources have ranged from avant-garde western music, pop music, noise, free jazz, experimental poetry and cabaret.
More recently The Hola's music has drawn elements of composition and performance from South East Asian music and Persian music, and has increased its use of electro-acoustic resources.
