About Me

Born, raised and educated in southern Virginia, Drew grew up listening to a strange mixture of 70's rock, motown, bluegrass, folk and barber shop music. He played in odd bands in Boston with obscure names, then after 16 years of stressfull driving moved to Ithaca New York. His ghost (or is it really him?) occasionally materializes at open mics where patrons can hear his songs about love, loss, and driving (sometimes all in the same song).
All songs are original and most are live unedited recordings of open mic performances at The Nines in Ithaca. Jerry at Freeville Music provides a tremendous service by making these recordings available to the artists - Check out his website www.freevillemusic.com (and remember to thank him profusely when you see him at The Nines on Sunday nights).
Here's what the critics have been saying about Drew Minson:
A message from Wayne:
"Well, it's like this. I knowed him back in 19 and 81 when he and I was abducted by the same alien vee-hicle from a country road up in the mountains 'bout six miles west of Blacksburg Virginia. I can't remember who was abducted first, but I remember clear as day him tellin' the aliens that his name was Neil Young, but they wouldn't believe him. He done a right passable version of "Needle and the Damage Done", and I'd a swore that he was the real thing, but those aliens wasn't havin' none of it.
Finally he confessed that he weren't no Neil Young, that his name was Steve Earle, but they still was skeptical. Sing "The Devil's Right Hand" they said and he did a great version of that song right there in the spaceship. He had to borrow the alien's old Stella guitar, so it sounded a bit twangy, but he did a fine rendition nevertheless. The aliens scratched their heads a bit (they was huge heads...no hair and kind of pulsating-like) and then one says, "Earth man not Steve Earle...Earth man is Jackson Browne," and then the other aliens nodded their pulsating heads in agreement and so finally Minson says, "Yes, you're right," and he goes into a fairly impressive version of "These Days". Well, let me tell you, them aliens was now totally convinced he was Jackson Browne and they forced him to sing every dang song on the "Late for the Sky" album. They were about to make him do "The Pretender" when he raised his hand up and said, "I cannot do that song for you Oh great leader...it's been so overplayed on Earth radio that I think I will become ill..." Well, that didn't make the aliens too happy, and he finally admitted to them that his real name was Drew Minson, and that he wrote original songs and would they like to hear some. Well of course those aliens didn't want to hear original songs, they wanted covers. And furthermore they were still convinced he was Jackson Browne. "Play more Jackson Browne or we begin the experiments," they shouted, and so we heard "For Everyman" and even "Lawyers in Love". He even threw in some songs by The Band, but the aliens didn't seem to notice.
Eventually them aliens dropped me off at some place out West called Area 51. They kept the Minson dude on the ship and to this day I believe he is still with them, possibly in the Omega System (that was where they said they were from). Just before they spirited him forever away in their ship, he winked at me and said, I'm gonna have 'em thinking I'm Warren Zevon before this trip is over. Now, truthfully, that is the last I seen and heard of the Minson dude (I know his name was really Minson because he surreptitiously slipped me a business card just before the aliens dumped me off at Area 51. I still have that card today...some 27 years later. I keep it here in my pants pocket...just a minute...here it is. There. See what it says? "Minson Dude".
Yours truly, Wayne Back
