Jean Grae (formerly What? What?; real name Tsidi Ibrahim) is a rapper and songwriter born in Cape Town, South Africa on January 1, 1976. The daughter of jazz musicians (her father is the celebrated Abdullah Ibrahim), she studied Vocal Performance at the High School of Performing Arts before majoring in Music Business at New York University. Grae later joined a hip hop music group called Natural Resource, and in 1996 they released a pair of 12-inch singles called Negro League Baseball b/w "Bum Deal" b/w "They Lied," and "Bum Deal(remix)" b/w "They Lied(remix)" b/w "I Love This World" on the label Makin' Records. She also appeared on singles by fellow Makin' Records artists Pumpkinhead and Bad Seed, and on the O.B.S. (Original Blunted Soldiers) double 12-inch single alongside crew members Pumpkinhead, Bad Seed, and Meatpie, and produced much of the material released on the label under the pseudonym Run Run Shaw. During this period she established strong ties with the Brooklyn Academy crew, with which she would appear throughout her career.
Natural Resource dissolved in 1998, after which Ibrahim changed her stage name from What? What? to Jean Grae, a reference to the X-Men character Jean Grey. Under her new moniker, she released her first LP—Attack of the Attacking Things—in 2002, and followed it with two more album releases over the next two years. Throughout her career she has also recorded tracks with numerous major hip hop artists, Atmosphere, The Roots, Talib Kweli, The Herbaliser, Da Beatminerz, Phonte, Mr. Len, Masta Ace, Vordul Mega, C-Rayz Walz, and Immortal Technique among them.
Jean has recorded an unreleased album with celebrated North Carolina producer 9th Wonder, of Little Brother fame, entitled Jeanius. This unfinished record was leaked on the internet, and subsequently work was stopped on this album. She plans to record another, to be called Phoenix.
Previously signed to Babygrande Records, she signed a deal in 2005 with Talib Kweli's Blacksmith Records.
Born in a military hospital in South America, Immortal Technique was brought to the United States in the early 80's while a civil war was breaking out in his native Peru. The US supported puppet democracy and Guerilla factions were locked in a bitter struggle which ended like most do in Latin America, with the military and economic aid of the State Dept. through channels like the CIA. Although he had escaped the belligerent poverty and social turmoil of life in the 3rd world, he was now residing in Harlem which had its own share of drama. Growing up on the streets of New York, the young man became enamored with Hip Hop culture, writing graffiti and starting to rhyme at an early age. Although he frequently cut school and ended up being arrested time and time again for his wild behavior, the kid still managed to finish high school and got accepted to a state university... There's more to the story but realize bein gangsta does not mean bein ignorant.. Educate yourself.
"Because even though I rip it better, I could not forsake you //
You are my people with the same oppressors so how could I hate you // " - Immortal Tech.. One of the realist mcs to hold a mic.

MURS
Pisces
Born in Mid-City, Los Angeles, CA (LAKERS!!!)
LL Cool J had an influence on this Living Legend when he heard "Jack the Ripper" on KDAY, L.A.'s all hip-hop radio station during the eighties and early nineties. After listening to KDAY for years and trying to freestyle to the beats he was hearing, Murs wrote his first rap in 1989. In '92 Murs met Anacron and recorded his first 4-track song. In '93 Murs met Eligh and Scarub and in '94 Murs joined the Log Cabin. Murs' first performance was at the Alligator Lounge (I BEEN THERE) in Santa Monica, CA. It was '95 and was the very first and ultimately the last show for the Log Cabin. The Cabin broke up and Murs moved up to the bay area to continue working on music. He went on his first tour of Europe in '96 with Mystik Journeymen and Arata. The same year he released his first tape, "Comurshul." In '97 Murs released his next tape, "F'Real" and, as Murs puts it, "invented colored tapes." During these early stages in his career, Murs made a name for himself by battling and usually beating any MC that stepped up. Sometime in the mid/late nineties, Murs met Company Flow and made the initial Definitive Jux connection. In 2000, he first met the Rhymesayers crew, which would lead to Murs recording the "Felt" album with Slug and also joining them on several tours. Along the way, Murs also opened his own record store in Tucson, AZ (which he later sold). Murs is putting in more work than ever, touring almost constantly, and his latest release, "Murs 3:16 The 9th Edition", (on Definitive Jux) is garnering worldwide acclaim.
LUCKYiAM
Leo
Born in Inglewood, California (YADDIDAIMEAN??!)
He is known as PSC, Luckyiam, Lucky or Cool Man #1.. In the early 90's Lucky studied the art of dope Left Coast hip-hop at the Goodlife Cafe among the Heavyweights, Freestyle Fellowship (tight ass group) & countless others. Wanting to create his own style and identity in hip-hop, he headed north to the bay area shortly after the infamous L.A. Riots and joined Mystik Journeymen with Sunpot Jonz. The Journeymen took the bay area underground scene by storm and then took the underground street tape hustle they invented worldwide. Luckyiam.psc is the co-founder of Living Legends crew and a consistent solo artist (Extra Credit series 1&2 and Justify The Mean$, all critically acclaimed*). In addition to the Mystik Journeymen, he also is a member of 2 other inner crew groups, (The CMA, with Grouch and The Underbosses with Murs). Always on the road touring & promoting projects, 2003, saw Lucky take part in 3 U.S. tours in one year! (Creative Differences, My Way & The Highway and Cali Comm.) In addition, Lucky hit Japan in the summer with Eligh! In 2004 Lucky was even busier.. He toured the Northwest with Living Legends in January, recorded with the Legends in Maui for the new LL Crew album, then he toured Europe for more than a month with Atmosphere. After that run of shows, he came home and performed @ both days of The Coachella Festival* and then it was off to Japan again with Murs & Eligh. Soon after returning from Japan, Lucky went to South America & became on of the first underground artists to ever perform in Peru..
ELIGH
Pisces
Born in Los Angeles, California (YOU ALREADY KNOW)
The movie "Beat street" made an impression and inspired Eligh to make a trip to his local record store where he picked up LL Cool J's "I'm Bad." After one listen, he knew what he wanted to do. The year was 1985. Eligh's first official step into the hip-hop world was under the name lower m.c. and his first crew was the Boogalu Badboys (You don't even know bout that huh?) with his friend Scarub. At the time, they were both attending Hamilton High School (HAMILTON HOLLA) in L.A. They changed their name to Urban Instinct and then they met Murs, a fellow Hamilton student. The three of them became known as 3 Melancholy Gypsys (3MG). After being kicked out or his aunts house, Eligh moved up to the bay area and began staying on a friend's couch. The friends he was staying with had a house party one night and one of the partygoers was The Grouch. Through a mutual friend they were introduced and ended up hooking up to record a song together (sound familiar?). While they were working on the song, Sunspot came by and met Eligh and brought Eligh into the crew. From there, the rest is Legends history. Eligh credits a wide range of musical influences including Michael Jackson, Freestyle Fellowship, and Bob Dylan. Under his beat-making alter ego, Gandalf, Eligh has helped provide the backbone of the Legends sound and is responsible for many of the Legends classic songs.
THE GROUCH
Taurus
Born in Oakland, CA (The Town)
The Grouch always wanted to make beats since he first heard about hip-hop. His dad played keys and Grouch felt music was inside him also, but he hadn't planned on being an MC. Being from Oakland, Grouch grew up on the local heroes like Digital Underground, Too Short, Toni, Tony, Tone, and many others. Around 91'/92' Del and the Hiero (Word to all my hiero heads) crew were first starting to make noise in the bay and it was then that Grouch felt he could really make something out of this music thing. He had a friend who rapped and he convinced Grouch to start writing/rapping in 94'. He met the Mystik Journeymen soon after and they schooled Grouch on the independent hustle. From this moment, Grouch knew it was on. Grouch's first show as an MC was in 1995, it was at one the Journeymen's "Broke Ass" something shows in East Oakland. Grouch performed under his real name and the crowd showed him much love, which he says is the main reason he stuck with making music. Grouch's music influences include all the hip-hop greats from LL Cool J to the Beastie Boys along with the Bay Area classics and Jazz, Rock, and Soul music. Grouch has always taken the independent route and has done everything himself along the way, a fact he takes great pride in.
Big ups to Bicasso, Asop, Scarub and Sunspot Jonz.. I love you all but only could fit so much info and had to pick tha homiez.. On a side note.. notice how LL Cool J is such a big influence on all these amazin hip hop icons? Maybe i should go buy tha album...?

<..Jackie's Thoughts..>
Isn't it amazing how music can captivate your soul and make you forget about the world around you? Its almost like the only escape in this crazy chaotic place we call earth..
I know for myself, personally, I find music as being the only thing that keeps me sane in the midst of all the turmoil in my life. The beat matches that of my heart, the tune matches that of my soul and words match those in my mind which want to flow off my tongue but can never quite reach the surface of sound.
Regaurdless of anything else, I can always depend on music, my ultimate lover, to take me to ectacy in that I feel nothing but pleasure and pain in the worst of ways. Whether I'm crying, laughing, or staring at the wall, music is always there to share those times with me and to be the only friend that's ever stayed true to me.
The way the words match the sounds of the instrumentals never fails to amaze me. Its like taking some paints and a blank canvas. Useless and boring apart, but you put them together with a paintbrush and a beautiful, breathtaking painting can be created if the right skills are involved. The same goes for music. The beautiful art of taking words and instrumental melody and creating music. Whether it be jazz, raggae, rap, R&B, all music is music if its born from the soul and worked on with the heart.
I could go on and on but i'll save that for more intimate conversations.. Can't put all my heartfelt feelings on myspace haha. If you feel this way about music, then I'd love to get to know you.. otherwise, ride the yellow bus to anotha page ;-)
