Cavesluts is the first rock band from the People's Republic of China to record and release albums and tour in North America. Calling themselves a neo-Taoist group, they uniquely combine Chinese traditional musical influence and modern rock inspirations with their interpretation of Taoism in modern-day context.Hu Xiao (pronounced "who shall") founded Cavesluts in 1994 and wrote all the band's songs in English to dodge political and ideological control so that he could express his thoughts without having to confront censorship. He is the only one in the band that speaks English fluently.
For over a decade the Cavesluts has been an active force on international music scene. They have given major performances, including at the Kodak Theater (2006), the Japan America Theatre (2005), B.B. King’s, the Viper Room, the Window of the World Rock Festival (2000, where they headlined), and Pepsi College Music Festival at the World Scope Park in Guangzhou, China (1999, where they played before a crowd of 25,000 people). They have also won the Yamaha Asia Band Alert competition for South China and later represented China in Asia Finals in Thailand (2001). They have had their music videos and performances internationally televised (2000, 2002 and 2006) and have successfully played many a live performance on Chinese and U.S. radio stations. They have released multiple CDs including two full-length albums in the U.S. The biggest distributor in China, Jingwen Records, currently carries their music. They have shared stages with Swedish punk sensation, the International Noise Conspiracy, veteran Japanese blues guitar maestro Takeda Kazuo and the “godfather†of Hong Kong rock, Danny Summer
After a decade, the limited opportunities for a rock band faced with political censorship in China had been exhausted. Leaving behind legions of fans and despite the financial and cultural barriers they would face in Los Angeles, Cavesluts left China in 2005 to pursue their dream of playing their music to North American audiences.
Their Kodak Theatre performance was broadcasted live to more than 2.3 million households in North America via Phoenix-TV satellite carried on DirecTV and Dish Network.
The band also headlined the Lantern Festival concert in Monterey Park and their show attracted a large crowd that ranged from young children with their parents to groups of pre-teens, teens, college student and elderly couples.(http://www.ci.monterey-park.ca.us/home/index.asp?pa

Why Cavesluts? Caveslutism is the philosophy of returning to our natural state of living when we only had caves and everyone was a "slut". The Cavesluts, in pursuit of Taoist ideals of natural minimalist life style, wishes to send modern consumerism based civilization back to the cave to “live simple natural life†and ask people to “be sluts and conceal no desires†so that sex, deemed by Caveslutism as the ultimate drive behind human competition, will no longer fuel competition and therefore embody the passiveness of Taoism. And why passive? Because if our world civilization continues the way it is going, tragically we will be sent to a even worse place than the cave--into the dust and flames in a war to end all wars--a war over resources and energy.
Returning to the cave is a metaphor for a life that can be sustained simply and our demands for resources are minimal. Ultimately, this will help us survive together as a species.
