~My Bio~
“It’s funny that I chose dance as a career in the first place, “ says 20-year-old Tamika, an Oakland, California native. In 1992, at the age of 6 years old, Tamika was placed in a West African dance class at East Oakland Youth Development Center, also known as EOYDC, and from then on, the rest was history, well not exactly. “I absolutely hated it. I think it was nerves or something. I mean, I was a 6 year old who had never danced in front of anyone, and there I was. But that was only for one day. I got over it quickly,†says Tamika referring to her first day of class. But to her surprise she was actually very skillful. As if she had any choice, considering her mom put her in the class, Tamika continued with the dance classes and eventually joined the West African dance company entitled Imhotep Dance Ensemble, where her love for dance blossomed. With Imhotep, Tamika was able to experience things at a young age that a lot of people could only dream of like, opening of the Oakland A’s game, to dancing for the wife of then 49er’s Jerry Rice, just to name a few.
Tamika danced at EOYDC up until the year of 1998 when she was just 12 years old and in junior high school. It was around this time where she would develop skills in hip-hop, jazz, and would return to her African dance roots, and when she would decide that dancing couldn’t just be a hobby, but a life-long career. Tamika began dancing with Dance-A-Vision Entertainment where she would build on her acting and hip-hop skills, and she simultaneously danced with Dimensions Extensions which helped her to expand her jazz dance skills. Tamika, speaking about dancing with both groups, said she loved dancing with both companies equally. Dance-A-Vision incorporated acting into dancing which is very essential in the dance industry today. This company, she said, helped her to develop her own personality as a performer. Dimensions Extensions helped her to tone her skills in Jazz dance, ballet, modern dance, and she was still able to enjoy West African dance and also aided her in developing skills in other genres of dance, in which she is incredibly grateful for. Together, these two companies helped mold the performer we see today. Performances like the NBA All-star Team-Up Celebration in 2000 and Disneyland’s Magic Music Days in 2000 gave Tamika a first hand of what a future in dance could entail and all the possibilities available to her.
In 2001, after finishing a semester at Berkeley High School and after dancing with the two dance companies for 3 years, Tamika and her family moved to Sacramento, California. “ I was heartbroken. In the Bay Area, I was in two different dance companies. At Berkeley High, I was in the Afro-Haitian dance class and when I moved, I felt like I left everything behind, friends, family, and dance. I felt as if I would never dance again. I cried everyday for like a year. I was just that heartbroken.†It took a few years but after graduating from Mira Loma High School, she began dancing with a local Sacramento dance group but because of creative differences, she parted ways with the group. Shortly after parting ways with that group, she had another opportunity to dance with NBD a local, but very talented, Sacramento dance group. Dancing with NBD, Tamika was able to continue burning the fire that was started in the Bay Area when she was such a young girl. After numerous shows, including taking first place at the 2005 California State Fair Talent Showcase, NBD would prove to be undefeated and headed for greatness in the field of entertainment, but Tamika would have to move again, but this time to attend college in Los Angeles.
Currently, Tamika is in college studying to obtain a B.A. degree in Communications and Media Studies. She doesn’t want to just dance; she wants to embrace all aspects of the ever-growing entertainment industry. Tamika aspires to be an actress, dancer, director, and producer. She would like to do everything she can while in the industry, but her love and heart will always be with dancing as she is her happiest doing so. For this 20 year old, nothing is beyond her reach. Hoping to one day work with entertainers she looks up to and admire such as Ciara, Omarion, Janet Jackson, Chris Brown, Fatima, Trey Songz, Beyoncé, Bobby Valentino, etc., she is working extra hard to get to that point. While one can’t describe Tamika’s style in dancing, when watching her perform, one can see the love she has for the art. Surprisingly shy when it comes to dancing when she’s offstage, when she’s onstage its almost as if she becomes a different person, but expect a breathtaking show nonetheless. With the drive, ambition, love, and passion Tamika has for dance and the entertainment industry, it is almost impossible that you will not see her in a music video, commercial, or movie illuminating the screen with her talent.
