Mason Proffit

About Me

In August of 1969 Mason Proffit released their first of five albums and changed the face of music forever. Mason Proffits hit songs, Two Hangmen, Eugene Pratt, and Better Find Jesus rallied fans throughout America. The band toured from 1969 to 1973 presenting an average of 250 concerts a year while recording 4 albums for the Warner Brothers label. They averaged 2,000 8,000 enthusiastic fans, 250 nights a year for five years, and in each venue they left audiences literally frenzied! It was not uncommon to see the crowd rise to their feet time and time again as each song would begin. And then, as the band left the stage, rock the house with ten minute cries for "more, more"!So, in September of 2003, Mason Proffit returned to the studio and began work on their new album. Their sound is still cutting edge and their music is already being considered for play on Modern Country and Americana radio stations. Now they are reaching a new generation of listeners as they bring a fresh approach to the style and songs they helped create.Mason Proffit must be heard to be believed. Their energy charged performance catapults from love song to social satire to bluegrass to blues. Their up-dated version of their hit, Two Hangmen, is even more pertinent today and still leaves the audience shouting for more. Now, those encore cries can be answered again Mason Proffit is back and better than ever! And their show and new band line-up reads like a whos who in American Country Rock Music.

Influences: Though this group's recordings charted only briefly when released, time has been kind to Mason Proffit, and their albums are now hailed as works of genius. Justifiably so, since every track is proof of a band with wonderful instincts for melody and how to frame a musical idea. Mason Proffit was an ensemble that played a blend of music that was more country than rock, with occasional folk and blues influences to make things interesting.Other bands were experimenting with country-rock but never achieved this subtlety and grace, and there was a whole genre of protest music which lacked those same two attributes. The fact is that with Mason Proffit, both were in the same package. This band's catalog cries out for a re-evaluation and re-release.~ Richard Foss, All Music Guide 2003
