It is said that it takes a village to raise a child. Unfortunately, in today’s world villages are not true villages as they were at the inception of that statement in our history. Today, villages are absent of many of the resources necessary to give a child a proper rearing. One of those missing resources is fathers. No, this isn’t another article bashing the absenteeism of fathers in today’s society. There is enough blame to go around about absentee parents, even in homes where both are physically in the household. This is about recognizing what is being done by those who are doing things and the benefits those actions are producing. Arizona has been known for its lack of educational resources, but right here in the valley, a resource has emerged that is in part educational. It is educational, provides structural support, financial tools and a community of assistance.
A Mother’s Village (AMV) a 501c3 organization established in March 2007 is here to be the village that helps to raise a child. Unlike other programs that focus on teaching children to prepare for tests and make it to the next grade; this program focuses on the mothers. It is here to educate and train single mothers on reaching their highest potential in life. You know, give a man a fish – feed him for a day. Teach a woman to prosper and change a generation. (I know, it doesn’t go like that.) This program does though, so you get my meaning. A Mother’s Village focuses on taking single mothers from where they are today and providing them the opportunities to self elevate themselves to where it is they would like to be. Its founder Angela Kenzslowe-Scott was herself a single mother for over 15 years. Her resume as a single mother includes purchasing her first home at 22, obtaining her Associates, Bachelors and Masters Degrees; along with purchasing, creating and running multiple businesses throughout her entrepreneurial career. Being a single mom did not limit her and A Mother’s Village is here to ensure that other single mothers are not held back by limits either.
As author of the soon released book – “Single Mothers Can Prosperâ€, Angela has spent countless hours putting together a strategy to help single mothers develop the knowledge and confidence to make their own dreams a reality. A Mother’s Village focuses on the whole woman – mind, body and spirit. It gives each single mother the understanding of the purpose for which they are single moms – to make a difference in this world by overcoming, succeeding and passing on that which she has learned to her children and her children’s children. In an era where men through absence, inability or neglect have not taken the responsibility to create proper legacies, single mothers have to fill the void and fight for the futures of their children. A Mother’s Village is the military strategy for that fight. As a 501c3 entity, A Mother’s Village does what it does at no cost to the single mothers using its services. Through grants and corporate donations, AMV not only prepares single mothers to prosper through education and skill training, it scholarships some of those mothers into their first homes. This addresses one of the issues many single mothers face which is stable housing for their children.
As you can see, AMV is that village that it takes to raise a child. Certainly AMV can’t do it alone. Wondering what role you, your company, your city can play in a better future? Visit www.amothersvillage.org to learn more about AMV its services and how you can help. You can also reach them by calling (602) 290-2075 or email at [email protected]. It is good to know that the old adage is true. It does take a village to raise a child – A Mother’s Village.
