Magic Lantern

About Me

Formed above a North London post office in October 2006, The Magic Lantern take their inspiration from the heartfelt stories of folk, the spirit of jazz and the experimental openness of contemporary music before filtering it through their own lyrical and narrative sensibility.
With an immediately arresting sound, starting with the voice and the lyrics it carries but swiftly leading to rumbling bass clarinet growls, delicate cello plucks, swooping guitar slides and crashing percussion slaps, The Magic Lantern excel at wringing emotion from the strangest places, sounding happy, sad, frustrated, and vulnerable, often at the same time. Their best songs, whether they're fast or slow, feel like they're bursting with a wisdom that belies their youth.
Swapping instruments and textures, stories and ideas, The Magic Lantern’s live show is an intensely moving, indefinable experience where no-one leaves unconverted. This is chamber music for the masses, and it’s like nothing you’ve ever heard before.
We released our debut EP, Patriots, in July 2008 which can be found here and are hoping to record our album later this year. Our first single, 'Somebody Told Me' should be out soon, so keep your eyes peeled! As part the 'Hectic Eclectic' collective we're out and about playing in London and beyond, so keep your ears to the ground, the Lantern's shining bright....

Sounds Like:
"Pretty special i think you'll agree - outstanding acoustic song writing!"- Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music
"Some of the lovliest music i have heard this year. Lead singer Jamie Doe's vocals sound like a cross between Sufjen Stevens, Jeff Buckley and Bell and Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch. Definitely check out their captivating and hazily dreamy 'Patriots' EP."- The Stool Pigeon
"The Magic Lantern have an immediately arresting sound, courtesy chiefly of the wholehearted head-back-and-emote singing of Doe himself, but also of the telling range of textures available from the various combinations of instruments in the band. Thus a reference to a (metaphorical) sinking boat might spark off an all-hands-on-deck arhythmic scramble, or a fanciful song about post-apocalyptic refuges in space an appropriately ethereal cymbal whoosh but these are just the trimmings; what really impresses about the Magic Lantern are Doe’s songs, the idiosyncratic power of his lyrics and the fervour of his delivery of them.
Warmly recommended, especially to anyone who thinks meaningful eccentricity and sheer originality are rare commodities in contemporary music"
- Chris Parker, The Vortex
