The Music
Julia aspires to reach out to audiences through the passion
and honesty of her music, "when people take the time
to tell me that they have related to one of my songs or
that my music has reached them, it means so much to
me and is after all what sharing your music is all about.
Making that connection is all that matters".
Influences
Julia's musical influences are many and varied from
the Motown Greats, Aretha Franklin and Otis Reding
to singer-songwriters Simon and Garfunkel and
Kate Bush. Audiences have likened her music and
vocal style to the following artists : Beth Orton,
Sheryl Crow, Sandy Denny; Mariah Carey, Joan
Armatrading, Tracey Chapman, Chrissie Hynde and
Fleetwood Mac (!). "I'm always flattered and always
very surprised when people liken me to established
artists - Fleetwood Mac was the most interesting
comparison, but at the end of the day I hope that
I sound like myself since originality is an important
aspect of my music".
Whats in a Song?
"Life, love, heart-break, passion -
unrequited and reciprocated, happiness, sadness, pain,
anger and regret, hope and fantasy. Im not a very
political person and most of my songs are a personal
reflection of life's experiences and occasionally a reflection
of someone elses. We all absorb outside influences,
which affect our own thoughts and one of my songs
A Better World, is probably my most political song.
It's a reflection on global terrorism and an
interpretation of my own feelings and those of my
friends about living in this current climate.
Line-up
Julia currently plays solo but has just finished recording
her debut CD featuring Iain Aird on bass and
Martine Hardy on Violin (otherwise known
as Hardcore Fluff). Iain and Martine have interpreted
Julia's songs beautifully and are both exceptional
talents of originality, whose musical excellence
has added superb dynamics to Julia's music.
"Sharing your songs with other musicians
is a very personal experience where a very special
relationship is formed. When other people add
their interpretation to your music it's like painting
a canvass and inviting other artists to add their
own colours - when those colours compliment
each other it's a most magical experience and one
that you always aspire for the wider listener to share.
