Biography
South Somewhere aka Peter Owen was born in Buckinghamshire, England in 1973 and moved to London in 1975. He grew up on two deprived housing estates in Battersea SW & Peckham SE London .
In the early/mid eighties he became influenced by Graffiti, Hip-Hop & Electro and used to break-dance on the estates and in the community centres.
In the mid/late eighties House Music was hitting the British club scene and Peter at the age of just 14 was influenced by this and started putting on house parties with his friends on housing estates across South London. They would find an empty flat and within 48hrs it would be converted into a house party boasting 2 or more rooms and even a bar. The word was spread around the estates and these parties were packed. By the late eighties & early nineties clubs and warehouse parties were popping up all over the place and people were going clubbing and raving instead. The house parties got less and less frequent.
When Peter left school he started working for a builder and in the early nineties when he was only 19. Was asked by an Essex based Entertainment Company to build the infamous Club UK in Wandsworth SW London . This is where he gained valuable knowledge and experience of a real club.
Club UK at the time was considered to be a big venue of three rooms and boasted DJs like Carl Cox , Sven Vath , Laurent Garnier also promoters like The Best of British & Universe who run Tribal Gathering and set up Mean Fiddler . Def II Dance Energy on BBC 2 presented by Normski was filmed at Club UK and also The Sex Maniacs Ball was held there in 95 and the list goes on.
Peter was offered full-time employment when Club UK opened in July 1993 and became a member of BEDA . During his time there he worked in all areas including as a Lighting Technician where he done light shows along side some of the worlds top DJs and was seen globally on Sky TV. He helped launch Red-Bull onto the club seen and promoted other products like Budweiser and the Club UK own brand bottled water. Nick named by hes friends as The Peckham Spring . If you watch the TV series Only Fools & Horses then youll know why. The water was not from the tap but from Hadham Water . If you browse the site and click on Our Products and then Hadham Exclusives, you'll see the exact bottles sold at Club UK even to this day.
Peter is not a DJ but when the club was closed he practiced the techniques he had seen the DJs using. Theres nothing like having keys to a massive venue and this lead to him thinking about music production so he started talking to the bands/DJs and sound engineers about sound & production.
Peter remained there to the end when Club UK lost its licence . The Police raided the club and filmed it. It hit the news headlines the next day and was featured in a documentary about club & drug culture. The last straw was when someone sadly died at the club and the owners had to kiss goodbye to the licence. This affected Peter and made him consider a career change but there was a venue change on offer. Peter worked over 600 nights at Club UK and when it closed he moved to Romford in Essex, England and became the Bars Manager of Hollywood Nightclub. He was there during a multi million pounds re-fit in the late nineties and topped over 700 nights.
Peter states that he must have spent at least 15,000 hrs working in clubs and has seen at a guess after getting out the calculator about 750,000 1,000,000 people dancing and enjoying music from a variety of genres and events.
Finally Peter felt the time had come and he left the Company. He came back to London and remains secretive about what hes been doing and who hes been working for but admits to working as a builder, a security advisor and holding a few club nights of his own, writing music & advising others. Oh and relaxing.
Now that technology has made music production & promoting easier and with more time on his hands, he can now bring you some of that experience with a brain packed full of sounds, hes like a living sample bank.
Who knows what else Peter is going to bring the entertainment industry in the future but lets be rest assured that its from real experience and not just from spinning a few records in his bedroom, discovering music software on the internet and going clubbing a few times.
