Before any thought of a band, The Adventure Spirit began as two friends writing and recording songs at home and playing music simply because they enjoyed it. It was Tim and Leigh’s wish to create the kind of songs they would personally want to listen to (songs that are sincere, thoughtful and inclusive), and this inspired them to record the album Gem in 2005. Friend and drummer Mirra Siegerman lent his talents to the project and the seeds of a band were sown.
While the recordings were intended to be listened to by its creators and their friends, CD burners and word of mouth conspired to pass the distinctive songs throughout a wide number of social circles, until it was known and loved by many people. Encouraged by the popularity of their first recordings, The Adventure Spirit (as they were now known) created a second album, Hope Shall Carry On in 2006, which was widely embraced and passed around even more, sowing the seeds of what would become a dedicated fanbase.
After two albums, The Adventure Spirit sound has become quite well-pronounced. Generally consisting of acoustic rhythm guitar, electric lead guitar, bass and drums, and accompanied by instruments such as organ, mandolin, piano, bowed guitar and harmonica, the recordings are chiefly characterised by the distinctive voices of Tim Fry and Leigh Young as well as Mirra Siegerman’s expert percussion. Fast waltzes and shoe-shufflers are rhythmic favourites, along with ballads and slightly rockier numbers. Vocal harmonies are used throughout, illustrating the many curious thoughts, feelings and characters, native to the worlds within their songs.
With it's first songs recorded, the band felt it was time to begin performing live. Bass player Ben Tansy was recruited and rehearsals commenced. Though the instrumental range has been stripped back to two guitars, punctuated by steady bass and expert drum kit percussion, the sound has only become stronger. The Adventure Spirit regularly perform in and around Melbourne, with the intention of bringing their music to as many people as possible. With an ever-growing back catalogue and a dynamic live sound, the future is bright for The Adventure Spirit.
