March 28 2001: A press conference is held in Calgary, Alberta to announce the Calgary Roughnecks as the tenth League franchise. The Roughnecks are owned by Calgary businessman Brad Bannister. Kevin Melnyk is introduced as the Head Coach and General Manager. The Roughnecks will play their home games at the Pengrowth Saddledome, starting in the 2001-2002 season. The Calgary Roughnecks have tasted much success since entering the National Lacrosse League in time for the 2001-02 season. In just our second year of existence we made it to the playoffs, the following campaign we hoisted the ultimate symbol of indoor lacrosse supremacy, the Champion’s Cup, and last season we won the West Division. The privately-owned team -- Okotoks businessman Brad Banister is the principal partner -- is one of the few ‘mom and pop’ operations left in the NLL.But despite its humble origins and base, the club continues to attract many of the best players to have ever handled a lacrosse stick.Captain Tracey Kelusky, assistant captain Kaleb Toth, sharpshooter Lewis Ratcliff, and rugged defenders Craig Gelsvik and Rob Kirkby have all been selected to the NLL’s All-Star game the past two years, while Taylor Wray won both the league’s Rookie of the Year and Co-Defensive Player of the Year awards in 2004.Three products of the Calgary minor lacrosse system currently play for the Riggers – Kaleb Toth, Jason Wulder and Andrew Biers – and two of them, Toth and Wulder, have been with the club since the first game back in 2001... width="425" height="350" ...... width="425" height="350" ....
