THE STRUGGLE
We are struggeling to get/create our own place where we can organise the stuff we want the way we want. We don’t want to wait until the city council or commercial organisations provide us a place. By means of squatting empty buildings and turning them into social centres we claim back the freedom which belongs to us. Our actions are a way of expressing there is not much to do for a large group of people in Zwolle and that we are trying to change this situation.
BACKGROUND
Through the years there have been numerous initiatives to create places where people who don’t live the mainstream way could work and organise stuff. But this has never resulted in a structural free-space which stayed for a real long time. Squatted places like the Emma School, Golden Wonder Factory or CO-9 were evicted after quiete short periods of time. Other places like Eureka and DOAS which started out as squats were legalised and lost all their political ideas. Nowadays they don’t provide us the right conditions for organising our stuff. Than there are the commercial places which suck really bad… So for us there’s nothing left than to take matters in our own hands and do things the way we want. It’s not the easy way and can be frustrating but if we accomplish something it’s most satisfying for sure!!
DIY
The things we organise are based on the Do It Yourself (DIY) principal. DIY has always been very interwoven with the punk/hardcore and squatting movement. It’s based on taking initiatives, working together and creativity. Everything is anti-commercial and we never get funds from governments etc.
So isn’t there ANYTHING to do in Zwolle? Well there is now:
BROER CO-9
Broer CO-9 is a former industrial area, squatted recently. It houses several workshops, from cars, art, furniture to bikes and several people who live on the compound. There is also a concertplace which offers frequent shows from punk to grind , tekno to hiphop and all in between.
