ASU Students Jump-Start Promotions Career By Chuncey Ward, By Chuncey Ward The Student VoiceOctober 12, 2006Neither Kristin King nor Ebonie Ward knew they would be writing bios and press releases before doing homework, planning events and parties after studying for class, and networking with mainstream artists and production while in college, but they are making it happen.Ward and King, also known as “Sugar & Spice,” make up Platinum Plush Media Marketing and Promotions, LLC.They've hosted a number of events in Albany that have brought their business good fortune and respect including their first event, the official signing party of rapper Citty, also known as “The Cookie Man,” at The State Theater.“We put them together from start to finish; promotions, advertising, and all financial backings of the event including the creative components,” Ward said.Kristin “Spice” King also of Atlanta, Ga., 24, took a year off before attending college because she was unsure of what she wanted to do with her life. After declaring mass communications as her major, King said she did internships with businesses like Cumulus Media in Albany, Radio One, Warner Brothers Music Group, and Atlantic Records, all of which are located in Atlanta.King said that after interned with Atlantic Records, she began to understand how the music industry runs.“I saw what was not being done in some aspects of the music industry that I thought I could do,” King said.King said she found a niche in the industry and talked to her friend Ebonie about writing bios, doing cd duplication, and press releases for different artists and companies.Ebonie “Sugar” Ward of Atlanta, Ga., 22, said she came to college wanting to become a publicist. She chose mass communications as her major, since public relations was not offered.“It actually was a good thing because I learned broadcasting, how to write, edit, and work with music. All of which I consider valuable things that I can use with my company,” Ward said. Both Ward and King work at Club Push as administrative and promotional assistants where they had their biggest event to date for the LOD College Campus Tour.“We had our biggest party yet at Club Push with LOD and had an huge turnout. There were about 1,500 people there. It felt great,” King said.Ward and King said they were really motivated and inspired by an interview they did for one of their internships at DV8 Magazine with Hannah Kan, general manger for T.I.'s record label, Grand Hustle.“We make relationships with everyone we meet. Networking is the biggest key to success. You can be the smartest person in the world, but if nobody knows you, it doesn't matter,” King said.King recently interned with Rick Ross, southeast regional promotions manager of Atlantic Records. Ross said she's definitely going to be a force in the music industry.“She's a breathe of fresh air in the industry. Not many want to be involved and learn like she does,” Ross said.“For her to take her aspirations to Albany from Atlanta says a lot. With only a few females in the music industry, her drive will take her far. She has a lot to offer.”Ward said she was really motivated to get into to the entertainment industry as an intern with Edward “Chico” Childs, president and CEO of Multidisc Media and manager of BME Record's cd duplication.Childs said Ward goes above and beyond the call of duty when a task is at hand and that he has no concerns about her excelling in the industry.“She did a lot for me and adapted really well. She was brand new to the entertainment industry, but had no problem opening up and learning,” Childs said.“She's new to the game so she's going to have her hic-ups, but she's going to get it. No doubt. She's something special.”Elvin Fluellen, station manager for ASU's radio station, WASU LP FM 92.7, said together, they make a talented and driven promotional team.“Kris is an awesome promotions director. Her passion is going to make her someone major in either radio or the music industry,” Fluellen said.“Ebonie makes it a perfect pair because she's compatible and equally determined to be successful. Ebonie compliments Kris and vice versa.”Ward said she and King plan to move their operations to Atlanta to compete with national event companies and host larger, more up-scale galas and events.“We want to reach a broad audience. We're not going to limit ourselves to entertainment only,” Ward said.Trevon Duhart of Miami, Fla., 22, is a junior mass communications major and DJ for ASU's radio station. He has worked with Platinum Plush on numerous occasions, on and off campus, and said their drive is what's going to separate them from competition in the future.“They're the best because they hustle hard. They're responsible for where I am today,” Duhart said.“The first club party I was the DJ at was their party. Now I'm an LOD DJ. I give them most of the credit for where I am now.”ASU students jump-start promotions career Post your feedback on this topic hereDate Subject Posted by: No feedback has been posted yet.
