About Me

Born just after the Soul/Funk era of the 60's & 70's of Detroit while raised in dance-filled New Wave/New Jack Swing R&B of the 80's; the duo Soups & Specks (formerly Low Budget) embraced the gritty artistic expression of New York's early 90's Hip Hop Culture. Garnering immense creditability not only DJ's but also as a lyrics/production tandem on the rise for the turn of the millennium; the two would both have to overcome personal situations that would send the group into a relative silence that would last several years. Though silent the duo continued to mature as musicians expanding into the sensual sounds of House coming out of UK/Chicago & the vulnerability of Philly's Neo-Soul movement. This collective of their history & growth would eventually inspire the soundscape fusion into what is now..... Elby Sole ....................................... ------------------------------------------------------------ Though raised in different upbringings, both Jason Campbell (Soups) & Rob Spetko (Specks) were exposed to an enthusiasm for music at an early age. Whether it was Soups sneaking peeks at his Pops' reggae record collection while listening to his Mom blast Chaka Khan or Specks' home movies performing to the likes of everything from Michael Jackson to Phil Collins; the intrigue of entertaining & creation was set in motion......................................... ------------------------------------------------------------ When they first met in 1990 through common friends it was the age of dance routines (or what were termed airbands). "I'm saying if you could move & drop steps back then; that was it... you were it" Specks describes. "You had Scoob & Scrap, Heavy D & the Boyz, Guy, Bobby Brown, hell even Public Enemy had the S1W's"... Annually every school in their city would send the best airband to showcase their talents & though both attending the same school the two never competed together. "Yeah, I was always apart of the B-Team" states Specks. "Soups & his group would win every time out. The year before I started they did New Edition (Crucial) & the shit was a city wide classic; there was no way anyone would win after that".... ------------------------------------------------------------ - It wasn't till 1994 that the shared aspiration for making music & the beginning of what would become "Low Budget" came to pass. The funky bass-filled sound & authenticity of artists such as A Tribe Called Quest, Gangstarr, KRS, Rakim, Pete Rock & CL Smooth (amongst countless others) sent the two in a whirlwind of music history; honing their skills to anything related to the music aspect of Hip Hop Culture. "I've been beat-boxing in the shower since before I can remember & instrumentation always interested me... You know, how it was made, what they sampled, what kind of equipment they used” Soups chimes in. "Specks was already rhyming around school, so when we started hooking up, & eventually getting our own gear it just took over everything we were about at that point".................................................... ------------------------------------------------------------ - Through the late 90's "Low Budget" was a fixture amongst it's city's developing core of talent... Releasing countless singles & mixtapes; Soups & Specks were especially known for their ability to create a performance out of nothing... "House Parties, High Schools, University Campus, hell we'd ride bikes downtown when a nightclub was getting out cause everywhere was a free stage for us"
