About Me

I am now on esession.com . where you can hire me and many other musicians for projects online. Check it out, it's pretty cool: esession.com
Welcome and check out the music! I'm Steve Cox . Born in Virginia, grew up in Indianapolis from age 10, lived and worked in Cleveland for years and now live in Nashville since 1992.
I'm currently playing and recording with Trisha Yearwood . I've been Trisha's keyboard player since 1996. She's amazing. I love great singers. I played on Trisha's "Jasper County" and "Real Live Woman" as well as her new CD 'Heaven, Heartache and the Power of Love' on the Big Machine label. I also played Hammond and piano on Wynonna's LIVE CD/DVD called "Her Story". I toured with her for the last few years also.
I toured all summer 2007 with Alison Krauss and Union Station and I must say it was one of the most rewarding musical experiences I've ever had. The musicianship on her stage is absolutely stellar and I've never shared the stage or a bus with a cooler bunch of people. Thank you Alison,(it all starts with you and I thank you for the opportunity to play with you), Dan Tyminski (loved your coffee bro) Jerry Douglas (thanks for the Indians jersey!), Barry Bales (you were smokin on the clay targets-- let's go duck hunting), Ron Block (I feel truly blessed to have played with you) and Jim White (the human music archive, when I get my left hand better let's play some organ trio). The whole AKUS organization from the top down was a very cool family to be involved with. Love you all.
Before Trisha I was playing with lots of different people, including DAZZ BAND back in the day. "Let it Whip" was my first record with Dazz Band and we won a Grammy Award for that performance. It reached number 1 R&B and number 5 Pop. On Let it Whip I'm playing most of the keyboards including the Moog bass line (on the same Mini-Moog you see in the photo).
I love all different kinds of music as you can see by my influences. All music that speaks to me through spirit, groove or heart is what I seek out. Ralph Stanley AND Elvis Costello. Me'shell NdegeOcello AND Glenn Gould. There are only two kinds of music anyway..
I play all keyboards, specializing in Hammond B-3. Yeah that's right.. my favorite instrument was designed in 1935, has motors, a generator and a drive shaft in it, actually requires OIL, has a beautiful wooden cabinet and still to this day NOTHING ELSE sounds like it. There is no substitute..I've played them all. There is just nothing like the feeling of sitting behind 400 LBS OF ATTITUDE. The Hammond in the above picture is my 1961 A-100. I also have a 1971 B-3 which is my road rig. The A-100 stays in town and is the one I record with. The Rhodes in the photo is the same Suitcase 73 you hear in my tracks.

"Tricker Treat" is a perverted tango.
"Adios" is some solo piano introspection done with Synthogy's "Ivory" piano plug-in that was totally improvised.
"2 Conspirators" is an old school Rhodes and Hammond groove.
"Like frozen Smoke" is also a groove reminiscent of the old school. Hey, I can't help it.
"Synths Anyone?'" is also called "Fun With Nexus".. It's a synth thing.. you wouldn't understand.
"Reverend Doc C.T." will get rotated again at some point.. in the meantime please go check out Doc C.T.'s creativity at his website LOCATED HERE .
I tried to include "Let It Whip" in the playlist but the braintrust at Myspace uses "audio fingerprinting" and decided that you should not be able to hear a smash R&B hit that I played on and won a Grammy Award for. If you'd like to hear a bit of it, please go to iTunes.
I am running Digital Performer as well as Cubase with a ton of plugs. By all means let me know if you want me to play keyboards on your tracks! Send me a basic 2-mix and I'll send you back great keyboard tracks in whatever file type you need. Soulful Hammond and keys For Hire!
I've also written a book on the Nashville Number method which is on sale now at Lulu.com . Please go to nashvillenumbers.com to learn more about it, or just CLICK HERE to buy the DOWNLOAD VERSION of the book or CLICK HERE to order the PRINT VERSION.
