I have been producing music since I was a junior in high school (17). I used my friends Boss Dr-202 drum machine to explore the art of making music. Although the music was simple the art of making it sparked my interest. Before then I was a percussionist in concert band and marching band for 5 years, also playing the mallets for 2 years. Like almost every other African-American teenager I wanted to be a rapper. Gleaming from artists like Mos Def and Wu-Tang I formed a group called the “5th Squadrons” with a few other local rappers of Fort Wayne, Indiana. We went around local underground Hip-Hop spots to freestyle, listen to each others music, and tried to create a culture in the city. One thing that set me apart from the group was when we went to under-aged clubs. I never really could enjoy myself listening or dancing to other mainstream hip-hop music. I would usually find myself studying and dissecting the music because I knew I had the ability to create the same or even better music. So it was then I realized that I had to put a lot of practice, time, and effort into producing music. After I graduated high school, the money I received from graduation I used to buy myself my first studio; the Roland MC-303. In this machine I was able to express myself in ways I never thought I could. This drum machine truly taught me the tricks of the trade. I recommend this box to any beginning producer. But even with the mainstream sounds of the MC-303 I was still lacking one thing: arrangement. That summer I bumped into an old friend I used to freestyle with that also had some equipment of his own. This equipment came to be known as, for me, the industry standard; Pro Tools. He used pro tools to arrange some beautiful music. So he showed me how to arrange as well. At first it was all like French to me, but it wasn’t till after we parted ways that I understood what it took to arrange a piece of music. And to that I say: Some people intend to keep you in a box of unproductively knowingly or unknowingly…Change is good! Amen! While learning the art of arranging I bought myself Pro Tools, Yamaha CS6X Keyboard, the Roland XV-5050, and a Mac G4 dual processor. After producing for a year I still found myself in that box I was shoved in and in a lot of other places in my life so I gave my gift and everything I had to the Lord. I literally gave all my equipment away to my church, all $3000 of it. It was a hard thing to do but God had to be my rock and my foundation. Thus, I went 2 years without the thing I used to love; even though I saw it every Sunday, I could not use it for my own will. So after getting out of that box and into life I saw that I could use that gift I had to get me further in life the right way. Therefore now, I have an even better system (Pro Tools, G5, Reason) and a more focused goal with a clear path to achieve what I have been yearning to do. I am a music producer, aimed to create versatile music and to push the envelope. I will have a production company (Rettew Inc.) creating video commercials and music. The only question is: are you going to be one of my accounts?
