I'm the girl next door...with a little bit of rebel thrown in... :)
Born and raised in Arizona, two houses down from Waylon Jennings during his JD's days. He'd sit out on the little brick fence in front of his house during the early morning hours after work with his guitar. He taught me how to play guitar when I was just a young girl...sittin' out on that fence with him. Damn that man was something! Even then. Met up with him again in later years and he introduced me to the musicians and songwriters that changed my life.
I started writing songs when I was very young, and I find that they are almost like a journal of my life when I read back through them now. Music has always been one of the most important parts of my life, and remains so. I believe that music is the universal language that bonds all souls together. Yeah Yeah I know...sounds cliche' and all...but it's really true. I can be taken back in an instant to any moment in my life when I hear particular songs. That's powerful stuff. :) Although I began playing guitar first, I quickly transitioned to the piano. My hands were small, and small hands do not a good guitar player make! :) When I am away from my piano for any length of time, I get very lonesome for it. :) It's like an old friend...always there waiting for me...never impatient.
Got married at 18, had a daughter at 19 who I grew up alongside. In fact, I think she's turned into the Mom now. :) You can listen to her music below...in my "friends" section...Lori Denae. Especially the song she wrote about her Father..."Unwound"...heavy stuff...beautiful song. He was taken from this Earth much too soon.
Also have a very talented son, David...you can check him out on Liqdzunshine's "friends" site below. He's the drummer, and he's also an incredible singer, songwriter and musician. My two children are definitely my best accomplishments in this life. And my most cherished blessings. "They grew up with music filling their lives...with late-night songs and lullabies."
The studio site featuring Son-in-law Evan is also below in that "friends" section...Would Work Sound. He is one of my best pals, and I love him dearly. Took a pretty incredible man for me to trust the heart of my baby-girl to. But I never had a doubt... :)
Check out my little bro Steve too (Steve Larson Band and Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers)...two separate "friends" sites below.
Then there's our little Cherish, and Cousin Mike (Mike Fix), and Cousin Rob (The Fix). Also sister Marilyn (Marilyn Scott.) Ok, so yeah, I'm forever the P.R. girl aren't I... And yep, they're all down there among my "friends." Hey, what can I say, they don't have a "family" section! :)
My Father and Uncle were Nascar racers...which taught me about living on the edge. No fear. My Stepfather, on the other hand, was in the FBI. He taught me about fear. Quite a paradox. A true contradiction. Makes sense...someone wrote a song about me once...some of the lyrics are "She's a living, breathing, beautiful little contradiction...She weaves her songs about her life, and won't admit if they are fact or fiction..." :) It's called "Pretty Little Tom-girl."
I am a third generation Arizona native. I wear that proudly. My Great Grandfather and his team of horses hauled the boulder to the town square in Prescott upon which the statue of Bucky O'Neill stands. Most people go to see the statue. We go to see our "rock." :) My ancestors and relatives were not a wealthy bunch, but they were rich with heritage and a big part of Arizona history. They were writers, historians, songwriters and musicians. And that has continued to flow down through the generations, reaching my precious children that are probably the most talented of the whole bunch. If I do say so myself!! :) I'm proud of my heritage. I am part Swedish and part Cherokee. And yeah, that same Great Grandpa went to a federal prison for a while for counterfeiting. I didn't say we weren't a COLORFUL bunch!! We rewrote Arizona history in many ways! :)
I learned to follow my dreams at a very young age. There were no obstacles great enough to break my spirit...or the spirit of my children. Their strength gave me strength and vice versa. There were times when all we had were each other. And that was enough. We made it through. They are my best friends.
Moved to Texas for 15 years, then to California for several years, and then found my way back home to Arizona a few years ago. I have learned since I've been home that everything in life is a lesson. Sometimes we are not sure why we are drawn to a place...like coming home...but if we "trust our hearts to lead us" and just believe in where the universe directs us...we find our place in the world. How interesting that for me...it was right here...back home. The reason is finally clear...and I am happy I've always believed in taking leaps of faith. How many of you out there are paying attention? I change this little paragraph often. :) I do quite naively still believe in miracles and happy endings. And you know what? I may just be right.
I travel back and forth to California all the time, and one of my favorite things in the world is that beautiful drive across the desert at sunset. Arizona still has the best sunsets in the world. Even though the sun setting over the ocean comes in a close second. Can't quite figure out which place is home, so I claim them both.
In my spare time, wrote a book, a screenplay, a couple hundred songs, recorded, produced, and handled several world tours for bands who turned out to be some of my favorite people, most of whom you can check out on my friends list below. Lots of my brothers and sisters in spirit are smiling up at me from that "friends" list every day. I love looking at them, all tucked safely away in their "space." :) When you have a minute, take a look at their sites and buy their tunes. Gotta keep my brutha's workin'!
We just finished working on the most beautiful album that I have ever had the opportunity to be a part of in my entire life. I feel so blessed that we were brought together...for so many reasons...and that one of the best experiences of my life turned out to be recording with my family and those people in my life closest to me. A true labor of love. Check it out at myspace.com/martymitchellband.
I have reconnected with so many of my old home-boy musician friends since being home, and that's been the best part. Seems like we're all gathering back here in Arizona for some reason. I'm a member of the Arizona Songwriters Association and I'm the President of the Arizona Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame, and you can check out our other two sites as well: http://www.azmusichalloffame.org and http://www.myspace.com/amehof. Many of our "friends" are inductees and advisory board members. It's worth the look...trust me! :)
Am finally finding my way in this crazy, mixed up world...and making peace with it...and hoping I keep making a difference. I am truly blessed to have the people in my life that are here now...along with those that have always been...And I'm trying to learn, every day, to "take what I'm given with grace....."
