Her mother was a music teacher/opera singer. Her father was on a world tour with The Emotions, Commodores and various other artists. Matisha could not help but develop a love for performing. At the age of 7, Matisha’s teacher suggested her mother entered her in the Chicago Public Schools oratorical competition. Performing Langston Hughes’, “Landlord Landlord”, Matisha won district and went onto compete at State as their youngest contestant. Matisha performed in various musical theater productions in Chicago and at the age of 15 booked her first National Commercial Campaign for McDonalds.
Just days after her high school graduation, she relocated to Los Angeles to earn a degree in Theater and Dance at Loyola Marymount University. During college Matisha appeared in several national commercial campaigns and on television shows such as, Strong Medicine, Resurrection Boulevard, Arrest & Trial and Its A Miracle. She also danced for acclaimed director and choreographer Jamie King. Reclaiming her love for singing, she began performing and recording with a rhythm and blues band, Resurrection, in and around the Los Angeles area.
Shortly thereafter, Matisha was cast as a Stepp-Sister in the Ovation Award winning Los Angeles production of Dreamgirls, re-created, choreographed and stared in a musical revue called The All Night Strut, in which she was nominated for two NAACP awards, and won the ADA award for best choreographer and actress in a musical, toured the U.S. with Tyler Perry and cast as the lead in the LA Times Critic’s Choice production of “The Next Big Thing”.
Matisha’s colorful career has influenced her to find her own voice as a solo artist. She joined ASCAP and created, nikkibme music and is currently creating a uniquely melodious sound that she likes to classify as Urban Suburban Funk.
You can currently see Matisha on DVD in Tyler Perry's stage play "What's Done In The Dark" in the role of Angela Lovett, and on CBS in ‘The Unit”.
