CHECK US OUT ON WWW.EAAMPLIFY.COM!!!!!! SUPPORT OUR SA BANDS!!!!In early 2005 4 complete strangers, Michelle Rohrbeck (Vocals). Uncle Ray Rays (Ray Barber) (Guitar), Wayne Clayden (Drums) and Sean Stephen (Guitar) met for the 1st time while playing in a compulsory college band at the Campus Of The Performing Arts (COPA). They instantly shared some sort of connection and became friends with each other, outlasting all the other college students in the ensemble. At this time they only played covers for college gigs.It was only towards the end of 2005 that they got bored of playing covers and decided to try something new, so Uncle Ray Ray started playing a simple yet powerful guitar riff and the rest of the band just joined in and the end result was “Who Knows What I Am.†Almost 1 week later Uncle Ray Ray once again started jamming a different riff and they ended up with Sane Madness. After the completion of these 2 songs they made the decision to become a proper band… and DOWNWARD SPIRAL was born! Downward Spiral continued writing songs for the rest of that year and into the next when Uncle Ray Ray announced that he’d be immigrating to Australia soon but before he left he wanted to play at least 1 gig. So on the 3rd March 2006 Downward Spiral played their 1st gig at London Calling in Troyeville. Ray’s friend Gavin came to temporarily fill in on Bass Guitar. And it wasn’t long after that more gigs began to flow in. the band had also recorded their 1st very rough demo consisting of “Who Knows What I Am†and “Sane Madness†with Sean’s friend Chris on Bass Guitar.During all this the band continued to search for a possible replacement for Uncle Ray Ray but were not having much luck. Then Ray announced that he would no longer e immigrating because of constant delays, which was a huge relief to the rest of the band! Wayne then organized that the band record their 2nd demo at Audio Matrix in Bryanston with Mark Phillips. This demo was of much higher quality than the 1st and consisted of 4 songs. The band continued to gig extensively all over and entered 2 Battle Of The Bands competitions, The Emerging Sounds Competition and The Keg and Lion Battle Of The Bands, both in which they did very well making it to the National Semi Finals of The Emerging Sounds and coming 3rd in The Keg And Lion Battle. The band also entered the COPA Song Writing Competition coming 2nd on Judges Choice and 1st for Audience Choice. Then once again the problem of a Bass Guitarist popped up as Gavin announced that he’d be leaving. The problem was finally solved when Ray brought in his friend Dean who has remained the bands Bassist ever since. In late 2006 the band was contracted be Erwin Wertwijn of Emusic-Group, who had published Sanon Gas/ Seether, and was interested in signing Downward Spiral. So in November 2006 Downward Spiral signed a publishing agreement with Emusic-Group and played at the launch in Emusic-Groups Record Label on the 1st December 2006.The band has been busy gigging extensively ever since, has had their 2nd demo of “Who Knows What I Am†played on Tuks FM , have self-recorded their 3rd demo of 5 songs, and have done 2 professional recordings, 1 an EP and the other a single of “Sane Madness†but both have not lived up to the bands expectations as they only want to release the BEST to the public. They also have a new manager (Sam Rohrbeck) who is booking all the gigs and promoting the band.Downward Spiral plans to write all new and better songs so that they may release an album and send it overseas in order to try achieve all of the members dreams of becoming a band of International status and join our fellow South Africans Seether on top of the world.contact us on:
