I'm a record company exec, producer, engineer, a partner in a recording studio, artist manager and music industry consultant that plays guitar pretty well also.
Formerly the talent buyer for internationally known jazz club “The Jazz Bulls”, and A&R rep for jazz label A440 Music Group, Gerey Johnson was the leader of 2 bands – “Cool World” -- which Chicago Magazine called "the area's best contemporary jazz and R&B band” and Sumo, an “acid-jazz collective” which had been playing steady Sunday nights at the Chicago club “the Elbo Room” for the past several years. My recording credits of note as a guitarist, include Brian Culbertson’s new album for Warner Bros., “Come on Up”, featured on the track “Midnight” with Marcus Miller and Steve Cole, on Michael Manson’s release “the Bottom Line”, and Nelson Rangell’s “Look Again” on which he also wrote and produced the song “Something’s goin’ on”. I co-wrote Steve Cole’s single “When I think of you”, which has become a “smooth jazz” classic for his first release on Atlantic records and penned the song “Color Me Blue” for the “Baywatch” album which was released in Europe a few years ago. I'm featured on albums by “the Braxton Brothers” and Higher Octave artist Jimmy Sommers. I recently produced the 2004-2005 jingle bumpers for Clear Channel station WNUA 95.5 in Chicago. I've also played on releases for jazz legend, George Freeman (At long last, George), Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, gospel diva Yolanda Adams, R&B legend Mary J. Blige , Grammy nominated dance producers Steve “Silk” Hurley, Terry Hunter , George “Georgie Porgie” Andros and singer Lisa Stansfield. When not performing in town, you can catch me playing guitar with Blue Note recording artist Steve Cole, on BET J at the Barbados Jazz festival with Boney James, R&B singer Lorenzo Owens, the british group “Down to the Bone”, and with Jeff Kashiwa, Kim Waters and the Sax Pack.
