Jou is a 16-years old boy who was born on Earth but had to move to Mars because his father was a convict. Jou's strong desire to return to his homeplanet is the main factor in his actions during the cartoon's developments.Jou is supposed to resemble a carefree and rebellious teenager who resents the power of officials, but as the story goes on and the characters face more challenges, physical as well as mental, Jou's character grows and develops.Jou's relations with the other characters are various. While he is good friends with Mike and Damien, his relationship with Jenny is somewhat complicated: he often laughs at her hot-tempered spirit and her obvious jealousy of him to the princess - it is implied that Jenny has "a thing" for Jou. However it is likely that he too has feelings for her. In the American version the two declared their love for each other in the last episode.Jou's relations with the princess is the favorite plotline of some fan's of the cartoon. It is implied that princess has feelings for Jou and that these feelings are mutual, however fans tend to interpret the plotlines differently: some, as it is mentioned before, believe that Jou is meant to be with the princess, while others are sure that it is Jenny he loves.During the whole storyline Jou has a nemesis - Icelander. Their rivalry begins on board of the Elshank, but when Icelander switches sides, the two become real enemies and have to face each other each episode. However their relationship develops in the last episode, when the two make up and shake hands (the action that sets of an unexpected reaction.Jou hates Gameron and the feeling is mutual. His relationship with the rest of the crew is practically non-existent.
