About Me

Hello, My name is James. I play the drums and vibraphone. I used to live in Leeds, I now live in Berlin. I play with several people, some more than others, its all in the top 8 so have a listen:
The Pattern Theory
Sunken Sails
Carl Schilde
Lukas Creswell-Rost
The Declining Winter
I also do remixes
When performing solo, I do all the above music live with two un-synced loop pedals, a vibraphone, a drum kit, a keyboard, lots of cables and a notebook. Solo I've been fortunate to support some cracking bands; Efterklang, Bracken, Her Name is Calla, Moleck. Playing in bands i've supported (amongst others....); The Drift, Icy Demons, Damo Suzuki, Beach House, Zu, Neptune, The Wave Pictures, Thalia Zadek, BBC Big Band, I concur.... etc etc.
Solo It looks a little like this:
Band wise:
To book me for a show, have a drum lesson, get a remix done, or hire me as a session man send me a message or email me on:
[email protected]
Cheers
James.
p.s. - It would appear the myspace player would be adding a clipping distortion to a couple of the tracks (coping/middle song) Myself and Lukas checked this on his, and my masters and on the cd version, I've no idea where this has come from. Its not me and its not him (Luke mastered it....).
p.p.s. as reported a while ago my ep is available to download from the fat cat website, however word has come through that this doesn't work 100%.... If you're having problems send me an email on the above address and i'll email the ep over.....

My Interests

Music:

Influences: Percussion, Loop pedals, Analog Synths, Transistor Organs, Band mates, Friends, Damon Che, Steve Gadd, Bill Bruford.
Sounds Like: "James Yates is a phenomenon. Surrounded by a makeshift console of samplers, keyboards, percussion and drums, he constructs intricate minimal ambient confections of glockenspiel, synth and rhythm one bar at a time - watching him is like looking at the musical equivalent of Rolf Harris - phrases look and sound incongruous until the last piece is in place, then... bliss. Genius deconstruction, masterful execution and utterly gutting as he and the rest of Pattern Theory are buggering off to Berlin." - Sandman Magazine
Type of Label: Unsigned
