Band Members: When working on zero-budget films, I am forced to play all the instruments myself - which is a real bugger because I miss out on creative collaborations with other artists. When I have called upon other musicians, I have been lucky to call upon some really fine performers. Naomi Radom (of Coda, and other projects) performed many of my earlier pieces for violin. Also Marcus Holden has supported me through live performance and recordings. In Holland, Jacob Plooij premiered a number of pieces. The lovely Kate Adams, on cello, performed on my score for the film Daydream (also known as Majolica). A number of orchestras have also performed my works - in Australia and overseas, professional and community. These include: Tasmanian Symph, Penrith Symph, Sutherland Shire Symph (all Australia) and the Wittenberg Symph in Springfield OH.I have also been blessed to work with some great writers and performers who have passed through Eora College in Sydney, where I teach recording technology and writing for film - Wire MC, the Stiff Gins, Jimmy Little, James Henry, Athron McCann, Kelly Staines, Steve Marquis (Songsta), Michael Brown, Lucas Hendricks, Gabby DiNallo, Scot Saunders, and many others too numerous to mention.
Influences: Influences include Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Sylvian, Erik Satie, Claude Debussy, Portishead, Fat Boy Slim.
I grew up in the '70s - never really clicked with American music. So my faves (in rough chronological order) were The Beatles, Queen, Yes, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Roxy Music (early - not late)/Brian Eno/King Crimson and all their spin-offs, Genesis (early - not late)/Peter Gabriel (not so much Phil Collins). Then punk hit! I was big on Radio Birdman for a while - dunno why, must have been the hormones! Then the glorious late '70s and '80s - XTC (can't go past 'em!), Split Enz, Midnight Oil (yes the Aussies/NZers start to creep in here).I played in bands all through the '80s, starting with an originals band (Adrenalin) that morphed into a cover band (Carbon Copy). Our drummer went off to play with the Aust. Doors Show and the singer and I put a Bowie show together (please forgive us father, for we have sinned).Through the '90s, I was studying at Sydney Con and didn't have much time to follow popular music - preferring instead the particularly un-popular contemporary art music (most of which I abhor now!) but I played with a celtic folk band The Ragged Band all through the '90s - toured several times and put out a couple of CDs. We loved writing and singing songs in languages that few people could correct us on - Welsh and Cornish.Since completing my course at the Con, I have focussed on writing for film and for community groups, most connected with the Hawkesbury National Fiddle Festival.I love the orchestral colours and the lyrical melodies of Ennio Morricone - especially in his scores for Once Upon a Time in America and The Mission.
I am passionate about Renaissance choral music, particularly the more tortured sacred music of Gesualdo.
Sounds Like: Recently, much of my composition has been for film scores, but I also have a number of opera libretti to work on. I write for string quartets and orchestras, and there's also an album of songs waiting to be produced!I like good sounds and strong melodies, and I'm interested in ear-catching production techniques. I hope to develop my own contemporary approach to the Renaissance use of counterpoint. I seek to engage the richness of multiple musical layers with modern techniques, including electronica.Emotion is something sorely lacking from contemporary classical music - I want to put it back!
