The True Wong Fei Hung

About Me

Wong Fei Hung (1847- 1924) was a legendary Kung Fu master, a noted physician, and champion of the poor and helpless. Known for helping all in need, his heroic exploits have been immortalized (and embellished) in well over a hundred films starring the likes of Kwan Tak Hing, Gordon Liu, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and others. Wong Fei-Hung was born on July 9th, 1847. The son of famous martial artist and physician,Wong Kay-Ying (a famous member of "the Ten Tigers of Kwantung"), Fei Hung grew up around his father's clinic, Po Chi Lam. It was here, working alongside his father, that Fei Hung learned bone setting and traditional Chinese medicine, as well as the importance of compassion, evenhandedness, and kindness, especially for those in need. These lessons would be instrumental in helping to mold Wong Fei Hung into the man he would become. As a youth Wong Fei Hung studied Hung Gar style Kung Fu under his father's teacher, Luk Ah Choi. As he grew older he began studying under his father, who was a master in his own right. By his early twenties Fei Hung was becoming well known as a physician, a martial artist, and a humanitarian, following humbly in his father's footsteps.During this time Fei Hung was also the martial arts combat instructor for general Lei Wing Fok's 5th Regiment of the Canton army for the Ching dynasty. He also did volunteer work for the Canton Civilian Militia, a "neighborhood watch group" that functioned similar to the local sherriffs of the American Wild West, representing the face of justice and law across the untamed, lawless countryside. The militia filled a much needed void, as during that time the Ching government was too overextended and corrupt to provide needed protection to its people. Some of his more illustrious students would even go on to become revolutionary followers of Sun Yat-Sen, the provincial president of the Republic of China. As a result of this (and the number of high quality students that followed him)Wong Fei Hung's teachings spread throughout China.Along with being remembered in history for formalizing one of Hung Gar's more significant forms, Tiger Crane, he's also remembered for his famous "No Shadow Kick" technique, a kick believed to be so fast that it cast no shadow. This all the more intriguing, and a testement to his legend, due to the fact that Hung Gar is classicly known for its emphasis on punches and hand strikes over kicks. He was also often referred to as the "King of Lions" as he was reknowned for his incredible mastery of lion dancing.During the early years of Britain's occupation of Hong Kong Fei Hung travelled there to defend the Hong Kong branch of Po Chi Lam, which ended up exploding into a bloody and deadly confontation. In an effort to avoid being prosecuted under British law Fei Hung returned to Canton.Shortly after returning to Canton Wong Fei Hung passed the government exam and earned the title of general. He was then stationed in Fujian Province, where the Governor, Tong Jing Chung, was sympathetic to the revolutionary cause, and had expressed a desire to break from the Ching ruled China and establish an independant republic...
