In a misguided attempt to relive my youth, I decided to get a skateboard at age 25. Two-titanium-screws-in-the-ankle later, I accidentally ended up in Brian Hendrick’s film production class, where I made my first film, “The Bag,†a horrible short film, which will eventually haunt me.That’s when the wonderful people at Visa gave me a plastic backhoe to dig myself out a video editing suite and a camera. Always thinking ahead, I saved all of the boxes from the equipment to build my future home.I have put the equipment to questionably-good use, and created more than a dozen short films since then, some of which have screened internationally at film festivals, won awards, and been acquired by CBC for television broadcast.I am currently collecting the memories of complete strangers, in the form of abandoned 8mm and Super 8 home movies, which I use to create short films and a weekly video podcast called “other peoples memories.†I anxiously await the lawsuits. You can be arrested for looking into other people’s homes, but not for looking at their home movies – At least, not yet.In the future, I plan to fake my own death to avoid creditors, and to continue deluding myself into thinking I might actually make a living creating films.
