Can I help you sir... I mean madam?

About Me

I live in a duplex of lucid illusions. I wear a hair shirt of angst under a generic smile. It surprises me to hear a voice that isn't my own, inside my head. I thought I was a woman, but it becomes more and more apparent that appearances are deceiving. I've worked for an exterminator and in a cemetery and now I'm employed to guard lives. It pays less than the former two ever did.I'm an English major, Philosophy minor at the University of Alberta who is currently operating under the influence of Bob Dylan and Heidegger. I'm nice in person, but I'm much more honest given the emotional emancipation of the internet.

My Interests

Lots and lots of books, old radio shows, gardening, swimming, listening to music, having interesting discussions.

I'd like to meet:

People with something to say.

Music:

Bob Dylan, Franz Ferdinand, J.S. Bach, Broken Social Scene, Michael Nyman, Paul Simon (with or without Garfunkel), Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Tchaikovsky (whichever way it's spelled)

Movies:

Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, Amelie, Adaptation, Mulholland Drive

Television:

Television sucks. But that doesn't mean that I don't watch it. I'm a sucker for Stargate SG-1, Spongebob Squarepants, Law and/or Order, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Fairly OddParents, The Daily Show, Star Trek: the Next Generation, and the ubiquitous Simpsons and similar irreverent, animated fare. And documentaries. If nothing else, I'll watch PBS or CBC Newsworld. Only basic cable here, boys.

Books:

The Bible (just kidding... only the bits with blood and guts and lots of sex and stuff), The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (all five parts), Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman, Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut, The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin, A Scanner Darkly by Philip K. Dick (what's with the "K." middle names?), Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, the Thursday Next detective series by Jasper Fforde, The Lord of the Rings by (duh) J.R.R. Tolkien, and many, many more.

Heroes:

so I wrote this thing

So I wrote this thing (for class) where the three main characters from three different books we read get together and discuss "empire". And I want constructive criticism. You hear that, people? Con...

people are stupid (duh)

For those of you who ride the bus, I have a question. Ever notice that some people absolutely will not use the back doors to exit the bus? I mean, even if they're sitting right next to the back door...

A quick update in the life of Arnie. This is my last year of my undergrad degree, and I'd kinda like to get better marks than usual, so I'm pretty busy what with that and work and all. I'm teaching ...

life in suburbia

Just to let the world of MySpace know, I'm spending the next while at my mom's house in Sherwood Park, the land of conservative affluence and middle-class values. Yuch. She had surgery on her foot a...

shirking flirting

Awkwardness! Now, I'm generally uncomfortable around people I haven't known since time immemorial, thanks to my awareness that I don't adapt well to social expectations, but some situations are worse...

I need more Canadian Club

I'm writing this paper for an English class on portrayals of women in 18th century literature, and I've decided that the play "The Rover" only allows for three forms of power for women: sex appeal, vi...

maybe I am a feminist

For my Literary Theory class (which is mostly review for me) I posted a rant on feminism on the class forum. I don't consider myself a feminist, simply because I see the flaws in all the different ca...
