Lonewolf and Cub: Babycart at the River Styx - Itto faces the Gods of Death!
There can be few showdowns in cinema history that top the meeting between the former executioner for the Shogunate, Ogami Itto, and the self-proclaimed Gods of Death! Chock full of tension, action, an atmospheric score and superb cinematography, this is the best fight in the Lonewolf series. But what would you expect from a character who has renounced the path of the samurai and become a demon? Special attention must be paid to the moment when the final God of Death comes to realise he's been slain in a fashion that he's spent years trying to perfect.
This clip isn't for the squeamish!
Your own nominations for the greatest cinema showdown will be greatly received and may get a showing! I might even pay tribute to your wisdom, oh wise one...
Rolling Thunder - Trailer
Sadly, cinema geek extraordinaire Quentin Tarantino named his short-lived distribution company after this largely unheralded gem, but don't let that put you off. William Devane and Tommy Lee Jones (in his debut) star as a pair of vietname vets who return home to find that everything has changed. Devane is Major Charles Rain, and boy does he miss the pain of the POW camp! To put it simply this is a classic revenge tale with a few elements that seperate it from the standard fare. As you'd expect from the pen of Paul Schrader, there's some fairly weird stuff floating around the mind of the good major and despite a few re-writes from director John Flynn (rest in peace), a lot of Paul's fucked up psycho-sado tomfoolery remains. Worth seeking out if you can find a decent copy from somewhere.
