BIO:
Being from the midwest (Columbus, Ohio) I was exposed to many great techno and house producers. Artists from Detroit and Chicago, as well as European artists from the Warp label, formed my foundation.
In the early 90s I started producing tracks under Trout, Spore, Elliptical, Lewis Overton, and my own name. The sound ranged from downtempo electronic music to Detroit-influenced techno.
I made a few recordings, played some gigs. I released two records in 1998-99 on a label called Transit started by my very good friend Shannon and myself. I got some good reviews, and it reached Europe and Asia.
Then something strange happened one night in early 2002...
I awoke to a throbbing headache around 4 am when a glowing light appeared next to my bed. First I thought it was Jesus. I was naturally frightened at first, but I was brought up Catholic so I identified with this kind of imagery. I quickly become comfortable with this supernatural situation that was going down in my apartment. When the light grew closer it turned out to be a band of four musicians playing some of the most soulful music I have ever heard. The singer was Curtis Mayfield. He was singing about struggling to feel accepted in this world. It brought me to tears. The guitarist was George Benson sporting a snow white Fender Strat and mirror sunglasses. The bass player was Charles Mingus. He wasn't playing a stand up either, he was cold swinging it on a electric bass like Bootsy. The drummer turned out not to be a musician at all. It was Stephen Wolfram. Then Curtis said to me at the end of the song: "Keep it simple man."
So now I make house.
