Harlequin is a Canberra-based MC specialising in Drum and Bass, Hardcore, Dubstep and Breaks. Although influenced by a lot of MCs in the Hip Hop scene, he has always been more interested in the live/club/hype-the-crowd-n-make-em-psycho side of the rapping realm and his style has evolved in that direction.Harlequin started practicing and writing rhymes in early 2003 after being inspired seeing other MCs on the mic at Sydney DnB parties, and his first gigs were during the summer of 2003-04 at various breaks nights. In 2004 he discovered the Garage styles of Dubstep and Grime and along with the established MC D-Tech, became the MC of choice for most Garage nights in Sydney. In the years following he had regular gigs at nights scattered across Sydney and it's Northern Beaches, practiced more and developed his style. Despite fulfilling the dream of simply being able get on the mic at parties, something was lacking for Harlequin in the constant focus on slower Breakbeat and Garage. This all changed with Harlequin's relocation to Canberra in late 2006. The crews from True Jungle Souljahs, Royal Rollers, Nemysis and Lighter Massive have shown him that there's plenty of madness to be had in the Capital, and this has paved the way for Harlequin to focus on faster DnB and Hardcore. These styles have proved to be much more suited to his style of MCing and he has quickly developed a reputation as one of the best MCs for energy, stage presence and high velocity lyrics. This in turn has led to him being chosen to MC/host at some of the Rave scene’s biggest events supporting acts including Brisk, Scott Brown, Neophyte, Evil Activities, Weaver, Suae, Impact and Haze, as well as building partnerships with local DJs Rushnosh (who Harlequin has played numerous interstate gigs with), Haks and Cotts. 2008/09 has also seen Harlequin return more to his roots by focussing on breakbeat and dubstep, and with DJs Dubdeckerbuss and The Crunch has formed the group Shifty Business. The Shifty philosophy is having fun with music we love and sets full of electro/breaks/dubstep/DnB madness are guaranteed to rock dancefloors! Watch this space for big things from this crew!!
