The Vanguard

About Me

"The Vanguard are an unlikely ensemble. They look like they could be in the cast of C4’s ‘Skins’, but armed with guitars and enough guilt ridden poetry to sink even Ian McCulloch’s boat. There are no overcoats here, but there is a thick layer of 80’s urbanism, cemented by the ring of effected and delayed guitars. The bass line lifts the songs to the realms of dimly lit stadiums, elevating them on stainless meat hooks whilst the other guitar and drums slice away; the former with crumbled distortions and the latter with a determined mixture of solid, spine tingling thumps and cascading rolls. A few comparisons have been made already, but The Vanguard are maybe the first band to really distil both old and new with an original sense of flair and dedication. For me the subscription form has been completed and is in the post with a cheque – it won’t be long I'm sure, before others follow."

ManchesterMusic.co.uk review - The Castle

This is the second session at The Castle for THE VANGUARD, a band with barely enough gigs to count on one hand, but an act who have made it their business to write songs first. These are songs that di...

Pay Attention!

Oldham Castle. Often, the Castle is quite empty for the first band's set - not tonight, though. There's a bunch of really hard looking blokes in and The Vanguard are slightly nervous - they needn't be...

This is The Vanguard's second gig; their first, at Dry Bar on Thursday, left the troop of mates you always get at early gigs stunned by just how good they were. Not just their mates - most of the othe...

ManchesterMusic.co.uk Review - Dry Bar - Chapter 1

I see a lot of bands' first gigs; Phil Beat provides a stage for a fair few of them. So I'm trying to ignore the fact that most of The Vanguard are people I go to the pub with and look at the band obj...
