Indie Dance Party

Yes, I've been at this station for 7 years! I'm the host 94.9 CHRW's original indie dance party. CHRW is the only independent radio station in a massive University town which sits halfway between Toronto and Detroit (in more ways than just location) - I don't know what that means either. As for me and the show ... I use Ableton Live, vinyl, and a synth. Lots of guest co-hosts and callers get involved. The station can get pretty crazy after midnight and the show is a favourite check-in for people heading to or from the bars, brothels, and souvlaki stands.
Most of what I play is pretty obvious stuff (LCD, !!!, The Presets, VHS or Beta, Scissor Sisters). Stripped down NY postpunk to more of a Indie House vibe and back. Except that I actually play it all mixed together without interupting the groove for random twee indie stuff. I'm more concerned with people dancing and having fun than being more underground and tech than the next guy.
There are some remixes and re-edits of classic and current Indie Dance, Dance Punk, and New Wave tunes (Konk, Devo, New Young Pony Club). There's some strange disco (Starguard, Metro Area, Daniel Wang, Lindstrom) and funk (Booty People, Faze-o, Captain Sky) with the odd 80s nugget (Roger, Fat Larry's Band, Pop-A-Groove) but mostly a whole lot of continuous danceable downtown grooves. Some of my own tracks make it in under the "Bedroom Producer", "Young Youth", and "Superstars of Sleeping In" monikers and I try to play some other local artists as well.
CHRW is the only radio station in town where the DJs have the freedom to play the tunes that they love. The station is owned and run by the student council. It exists as an autonomous entity within the university student center. In other words -its a hot mess.
I'm not going to try and make like my chart means shit but I do submit it to the radio station and Chart magazine. It also makes a few chats and forums with other scenesters (read as music nerds) where debates rage between whether the Paper faces mix is really better than the Erol mix (it totally is). Submissions that come my way are often passed on directly to other DJs at the station. Send me promos, it makes me happy!
