What if Steely Dan hired Marvin Gaye to sing lead and then used Little Feat for a backing band? Now let's say Eddie Harris decided to sit in with them for a set or two? . . . Yes, Lord!!! "DIGGIN'"
FUNK THIS returns with a slightly modified line up and another amazing CD. Paying homage to some of their favorite groups, this CD is at times funky, jazzy, rockin' and even holy rollin'. Flavors range from classic R&B to FM rock to gospel on this inspired sophomore effort.
"DIGGIN'" is another celebration as FUNK THIS evokes the magic of some of their musical inspirations. "We were thinking about some of the records and rhythm sections we admired when we started putting this CD together. Many of these records featured the core of the groups Stuff and Toto. Earth, Wind & Fire, Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, and the Average White Band had incredible rhythm sections that produced many exciting records we loved from the 70s. Add to this equal parts Grover Washington and Eddie Harris coming from Fabi's sax work, and you have an idea of what we were able to achieve here," says co-founder Chris Clermont. "We just said to ourselves, let's try to do a CD we would dig as if we had nothing to do with it!"
FUNK THIS was forged out of the friendships of three students from different parts of the globe who met in a practice room on the very first day at music school. Its members (who come from Denmark, the USA, and Italy) went on to work with many major national recording artists such as Barry White, Dr. Dre, Robben Ford, Brian Auger's Oblivion Express, Snoop Dogg, Jody Watley, and more.
Distinguished special guests on their CDs include Alex Acuña, Ellis Hall formerly of Tower of Power, Jimmy Haslip of the Yellowjackets, Jazmin Sky , Sarah Taylor and Annette Maree Frank.
The band says, "Music is our vehicle for expressing freedom and friendship. Hopefully we have communicated through our music the joy that camaraderie and friendship brings."
FUNK THIS is sponsored by: Yamaha, The Music Counsul in the Northern part of Denmark (DJBFA), Danish Musicians Union (DMF), and KODA, the Performing Right Society of Denmark.
