Nanos Operetta is currently demoing material for a large scale recording project with Einstürzende Neubauten vocalist Blixa Bargeld to be recorded in the summer 0f 2009. Stay tuned!
The ensemble is also hard at work composing a new commission for the world renowned Kronos Quartet and Korean vocalist Dohee Lee, taking inspiration from Korean pansori music through the prism of composer Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti western works.

Founded in 2001, Nanos Operetta is a composing collective and music ensemble under the heroic leadership of composer/librettist Ali Tabatabai, committed to ongoing experiments in cerebral endurance and digital dexterity. Utilizing conventional Western instrumentation as well as unconventional and ethnic instrumentation, homemade instruments, and found objects, the 6-piece ensemble incorporates elements of film music, minimalism, the avant garde, cartoon music, progressive rock, and ethnic music to create epic and highly detailed musical narratives, as well as collaborative works for dance, physical theater, and film.
Drawing inspiration from a multitude of sources the ensemble recognizes composer Ennio Morricone and lyricist Leonard Cohen as their patron saints and navigational stars.
Nanos Operetta has worked and performed with vocalists Blixa Bargeld (Einstürzende Neubauten) and Nils Frykdahl (Sleepytime Gorilla Museum); butoh masters Koichi & Hiroko Tamano; and dance theater companies inkBOAT and KUNST-STOFF.
Nanos Operetta's work has been recognized with numerous awards, including a 2004 Isadora Duncan Award and 2006 SF Bay Guardian Best of the Bay.
• In 2008 Nanos Operetta collaborated and performed with Blixa Bargeld and KUNST-STOFF to sold out houses in Bargeld’s international performance project the Execution of Precious Memories at San Francisco’s Project Artaud Theater.
• In 2007 the ensemble created the concept, score, and libretto for their physical theater opera Our Breath is as Thin as a Hummingbird’s Spine, in collaboration with inkBOAT and Nils Frykdahl. The show ran for 3 weeks at San Francisco’s ODC Theater.
• In 2007 Nanos recorded with mathcore icons the Dillinger Escape Plan on several tracks of their Ire Works album.
• In 2006 they penned the soundtrack for renowned Iranian filmmaker Bahman Kiarostami’s film Persian Garden.
• In 2004 Nanos wrote and performed the score to Serei, an evening length collaboration with Koichi & Hiroko Tamano and the Harupin-Ha butoh dance theater company, winning a 2004 Isadora Duncan Award.
• In 2004 Nanos Operetta created the critically acclaimed music and dance performance series 3 Drops of Blood, curated by Ali Tabatabai. Over a period of 2 1/2 years, the ten-installment quarterly series presented new works by Nanos Operetta as well as many of the country's respected composers, choreographers, dance companies, and music ensembles. Some participants included Guy Klucevsek, Cyro Baptista, Paul Dresher, Arnold Dreyblatt, Frank Pahl, Myra Melford, Boris KovaÄ, ROVA Saxophone Quartet, Edmund Welles, Gamelan Sekar Jaya, Shinichi Iova Koga, KUNST-STOFF, Koichi & Hiroko Tamano, Nancy Karp + Dancers, Janice Garrett & Dancers, Sara Shelton Mann, Dohee Lee, Ledoh, Sandy Silva, and guest artists from Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet.
