A 14-year-old boy was shot and killed in front of a Union City middle school not long after classes let out Friday, prompting a one-hour lockdown of the campus, authorities said.The shooting was reported at 3:21 p.m. on Whipple Road in front of Barnard-White Middle School, Union City police Lt. Kelly Musgrove said. Responding police found the boy with a gunshot wound to his chest; they attempted CPR but he died at the scene.A witness of the shooting, whose identity is being withheld, told CBS 5 he was a friend of the victim. He said a young man emerged from a group, pulled the hood of his sweatshirt over his face and began shooting."Just pulled out a gun and shot, two times," he said. "Both of the bullets hit my friend."The witness said the victim was a freshman at Logan High School in Union City. He also claimed the shooting occurred due to growing racial tensions between African-American and Latino teens in Union City. Police said they have not established any motive behind the shooting.The school had let out before the shooting and students and administrators who had not yet left campus were brought indoors, Musgrove said. No injuries were reported.The campus was placed on lockdown for about an hour while a flood of police officers searched the area for the shooter.Police indicated there were at least 10 other witnesses to the shooting. Earlier reports said the shots came from a white Chevrolet Suburban with black tinted windows and modified rims.
