first appeared at the Cape Comedy Club as an infamous
Diva of the Week back in 1999. His natural improvisatory
comic skills were so awesome, he was invited to join the
Cape Comedy Collective and appears regularly on their
circuit of venues around the city.Sky 189 started freestyling in about 1992 and has performed
sessions on radio stations worldwide from WSER Radio in
Sydney, Australia, and Unda Ground Radio Paris, France
to D Real Rap Show Internet Radio London (Gialive.uk)
as well as local stations Bush Radio, Good Hope FM, Cape Talk,
SAfm and 5FM. He also appeared at the Fette Fest in Auxberg,
Germany and the real hip hop festival in Le Mages, France.
Most impressively, he was invited to perform in a
hiphop theatre piece at the Cape/Amsterdam hiphop festival
in Holland He has hosted numerous top hiphop events
including the "Boogie Down Knights" series and the
South African National Break Dance Championships
"Battle Of The Year" at the Good Hope Centre.
Sky has been drum & bass MC for Sublime & Algorythm
parties since 1997 and has performed with international acts
such as Afrodite, Shimon & Randle and Diesel Boy
to name but a few. His pedigree is not to be doubted,
being supreme title holder of the "African Battle Cry"
freestyle competition since 1997 and now hosts the event.
He has performed with top bands such as Mood Phase 5
and Black Noise, and compeered the American
rap posse's Black August tour gigs (with Talib Kweli,
Jerru the Damager, Black Thought, Dead Prez, Boots
from the Coup et al) in Cape Town. He performed
along side hip hop scratch djs such as DJ Craze four time DMC Dj world champion aswell as Dj Woody 2 time Uk and ITF world champ.As South Africas first ever freestyle comedy rapper ,
Sky was a massive hit on their nationwide Green's Spicer
Comedy Tour Aug-Oct 2000 of eight campus cities,
delighting audiences and sponsor alike with his hilarious
creative interaction. He also performed with the CCC
at the Oppi Koppi Music Festivals in 2000/1/2 and the
Up the Creek Music Festival 2000. His first theatre
comedy show, all improvised alongside partner-in-crime Mark Sampson, Free-Styling, premiered at Arts cape as part of the Cape Town
Festival in March 2002.Sky 189 is a professional graffiti artist and qualified graphic designer,
and runs his own design company Word On The Street with his Swiss wife Nadine, another champion artist. They accompanied Mark Shuttleworth (first African in space) on his Hip 2B Square national tour of schools
where Nadine did the aerosol art canvasses at all 53 shows and
Sky hosted the event with true Cape Town flavor. For SA Music week 2003 he hosted a Performance Techniques work shop at the V & A Waterfront Cape Town, in August 2003 he accompanied three other comedians
to the Edinburgh festival where their show about South African
positivism and good news received a four star review.
In 2003 he performed at the Carnivale arts festival plus the Lvered music festival in Sydney Australia and won the Mc Battles in both Sydney and Melbourne. In 2004 he hosted the South African National break dance championships, Battle of the year for seven straight hours.
2006 seen both him and his artist wife Smirk take part in a artist in residency program by the Swiss Arts council from Jan 2005 to Sept 2005. Stationed in Basel Switzerland they managed to do two visual art exhibitions, paint and perform at graffiti events in Germany and Switzerland and win the Swixx competition for developing theatre shows. In June 2006 he performed at the Frauenfeld Open Air festival in Switzerland as part of a collaborative project between Swiss and South African Rap artists called the Rogue State Alliance.
The colective released a Compelation Cd called Rogue State Of Mind,proceeds of wich supports comunities and school kids in the Cape Flats. He has performing with the creme de la creme of Swiss Rap Artists pluss South african greats Godessa,Theba and Crosby at the Gurten Open Air festival in Bern 2006 . Sky continues to perform all around world as much as possible and will always remain proudly South African.
