Hiyas Philippine Folk Dance Company

Hiyas Philippine Folk Dance Company and Hiyas Music Ensemble in cooperation with the Filipino Youth Coalition, takes center stage for its third theatrical performance on Friday and Saturday, August 15-16, 2008 starting at 7:30 p.m. in downtown San Jose’s Montgomery Theater. In a production aptly titled “Sariling Atin III" meaning "Our Very Own," this scenic and highly anticipated presentation is an ambitious endeavor inspired by folk dance and music legends of the Philippine Islands. Experience our heritage through an extravaganza of brilliant choreography, exquisite costuming and special guest entertainer, Gabe Bondoc. Sariling Atin III is supported in part, by a Cultural Affairs grant from the City of San Jose.

Created in March of 2003, the Hiyas Philippine Folk Dance Company, guided by artistic director, musical director and choreographer, Justin Mambaje, and executive director, Jeff Bado, was formed by dance enthusiasts that enjoy the beauty of Filipino folk dance. In an era where authentic steps and movements are modernized or forgotten, Hiyas strives to present Filipino folk dance in its most traditional form by gathering the bulk of its repertoire from Philippine folk dance research organizations such as the Philippine Folk Dance Society and the Francisca Reyes-Aquino Foundation. The word, hiyas (pronounced hee-yahs), means "jewel" or "gem," referring to how its members truly treasure Philippine folk arts and culture. Hiyas is proudly a part of the Filipino Youth Coalition, a non-profit organization geared toward cultural awareness among Filipino youth in the south bay.
