I am Inuit. I was born in Yellowknife, N.W.T. in 1975. I spent the first 9 years of my life in the very small Inuit settlement of Bay Chimo{Umingmaktok}, with only 40 people, located on the Cornation Gulf in the Central Arctic. We did not have electricity, running water or roads. I was moved from my family when I was 9 years old to attend school in the nearest community on Victoria Island, Cambridge Bay{Ikalututiak} a 1 ½ hour plane ride away. I was routinely returned to my family for summer, Christmas and sometimes spring break. After graduating from High School in Cambridge Bay, I spent a year in Ottawa at the Nunavut Sivuniksavut Training Program before heading to Edmonton to take hairstyling at Marvel College. After graduating from this course in Edmonton, I worked in Yellowknife for a few years before moving to Kugluktuk. It was in Kugluktuk where I met my husband who was a teacher there at that time. In the spring of 2002, I made one of the most difficult decisions of my life: To move my family away from the Arctic to Nova Scotia where my husband had originated. Although it has been hard in many ways, there have been many positive aspects of living in Nova Scotia. Since moving here, I’ve been working on writing songs in Inuinnaqtun, my mother tongue. Inuinnaqtun is only spoken fluently by a small group of people. I sing to keep my culture and language alive for my 3 wonderful children so that they can carry it on. I hate to see such a powerful and unique culture die. This has been the main inspiration for making a CD.www.angelahovak.com My website is up and running again. I hope that you will visit the site.
