About Me

DANBURY — State Police say alcohol and excessive speed were likely factors in an early morning accident that killed one local man and injured another.Christopher Daniels, 18, of 227 Ragged Mountain Road, was driving his 1994 Chevrolet Lumina van north on the street near his home when he lost control near the intersection of Davis Road at about 3:25 a.m Thursday. The teal-colored van went off the left side of the road, plunged down an embankment and rolled over several times before coming to rest against the supporting guy wire for a utility pole, police said.Daniels, who was ejected from the vehicle as it rolled, was pronounced dead at the scene by an assistant state medical examiner shortly after the crash was reported.John Chaffee, 18, also of Ragged Mountain Road, Danbury, a passenger in the van, suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash, police said. He was taken by ambulance to Franklin Regional Hospital. A hospital spokesman said Chaffee was treated in the emergency room and released on Wednesday.According to Trooper Chris Decker of Troop D based in Concord, the lead investigator, Chaffee told authorities that the pair had just left Ragged Mountain Ski area where they had vandalized property at the resort and stolen some items.Mark Pins, the manager of the resort, declined to comment citing the ongoing investigation.Danbury Fire Chief Tom Austin said Chaffee was able to get out of the heavily damaged van and went to a nearby home to summon help. The crash occurred in an area that has a posted speed limit of 35 miles per hour.Austin said this is the third fatal motor vehicle crash department members have responded to this year."It's hard. He was a local boy and everybody knew him and his family," Austin said.Daniels' mother, Deborah, said her youngest son had a special zest for life, liked to snowboard during the winter and listen to music of all types. He was especially close to his two brothers and enjoyed going fishing and hunting with them."He loved to be with his friends," she said. He had just started work at George's Diner, a popular Lakes Region eatery located on Plymouth Street in Meredith, three days before his death."He was a great kid and we enjoyed him being here," said co-worker Owen Prite. He said Daniels had started out washing dishes but had expressed an interest in moving up to cooking. "He was a good worker," Prite said.Investigators said neither of the men was wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Because of its age, the van was not equipped with air bags. The state Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that no autopsy was to be conducted as an investigator went to the crash site and spoke with police who were working to reconstruct the accident.Austin said all of the van's windows were shattered as the vehicle barrel rolled during the crash animated layout @ HOT FreeLayouts.com love / music / movies / frazy Hot Free Layouts
