CHURN

About Me

I got my Myspace layout from pYzam .

Churn was started in 1991, in Norfolk, Virginia. A three piece, who has been compaired to Dinosaur Jr. and Husker Du. The two founding members (Scott and Andy), who previously played in a band "Gang Chorus", decided to move on and create a different sound. The band has gone thru many line up changes until finally joining the current Bassist Darryl Lewis ( ex. COMBINE signed to Caroline Records - They Rocked! He also played with many other bands). Scott and Andy used to play shows with Darryl and his bands for many years and had always wanted him to be in our band. Churn's past bassist were: Jason Gay (Lunkhead 76 and NINEVOLT PENPAL), The Rev. Darbe Warner (The Apostles and Black Jesus), and last but not least Chris and Nancy. Thanks to all of you for helping us. Churn was asked to play @ NYU where they were holding "The Independent Music Festival", in NYC (2000) - also was featured on a CD released by the IMF ( only 10 bands were choosen - *with the likes of Lee Ranaldo - "Sonic Youth"). Around the end of 2002 and the begining of 2003, Churn got a great offer to record with J. Mascis- "DINOSAUR JR."@ his home in Boston. I guess this all came about from hanging around after DINOSAUR JR. shows and talking with the band through the years, and having Noel - the Soundman (and the "BEST" Soundman ever!) @ The Continental Room in New York, who is a personal friend of J. Mascis. Noel was always very nice to us and would spend time talking about our music as well as giving us advice every time we came up to play. He thought we would really benefit by putting us in touch with J. Mascis. Scott and J. Mascis tried through several phone calls and e-mails, to set up a recording session around J. Mascis and the Fog's Tour schedule, but unfortunately it never could get ironed out. Maybe one day, we will get another chance? I still can't believe, we almost had a chance to record with our favorite band, and at his house of all places! CRAP!!! Churn has played with many great bands, opening for a SOLD OUT show on November 28, 2001 with The Strokes ( @ The Norva - Norfolk,Virginia * Churn sold 76 CD's that night and gave away about 100 shirts and stickers! The other really cool thing about the show - that it was just us and them - not a crazy 5 band bill - where no one comes out to see the other guys because it is to early), The Poster Children (@ Twisters - Richmond,Virginia * Scott stuck a Churn sticker on the guitarist guitar while he was playing - I don't think he thought it was very funny - we laughed), The Romantics (@ East Coast Surfing Championship - Virginia Beach,VA * alot of fun - they were very nice to us), Love Tractor ( @ King's Head Inn ), Five Eight (@ Friar Tucks), Candy Snatchers, Buttsteak , Combine, Antic Hay, Ant Man Bee, God in Famous, Action Habit, Time will Tell, The Mockers, Crash Smash Explode, Lee Harvey Kietel Band, V8 Love Affair, The Crums, Gold Streets, Man in Gray, The Bamboo Kids ( played with these guys twice @ The Continental in NYC), LostTribe, Unabombers, Nova Mob (( drummer from Husker Du )), Monks of Doom (( members of Camper VanBeethoven )), Speed Mcqueen, Jettison Charlie, DAS JAH, The Hustlers, Gutter Beat, The Worthless Dizzies, Fool's Holiday, Astropop 3, Golden Kittens ( in NY @ The Delancey), Foster McGinty, Downside, Tree House, The Pimps, Black Jesus, The Strap-ons, Plumerai, Stinker Bell, 1,ooo legger, MK ULTRA DC, Pilot round the Sun, Double Headed Fishy, Sumac, The Jane Anchor, Twin Turbine, Ricochet Rocket, Flat Black, Lap Dog, Tristen, Silverscene, Grind, Cartoon Boy, Tree Fort, The Slumberhounds, Stomp Box, Crawjet, M80's, Blunt, Ultracindys, Left Wing Fascist, ...Id, Gibb Droll Band, MercyTrain, Farside, Resin Nation, Clark's Ditch, Funsize, Fannycracker, The Union Deposit Road, and many more. Also played several Music Showcases in Washington D.C. ( one show was the Independent Music Showcase * Ian MacKaye and couple other band members from "Minor Threat" were there!), Baltimore MD and Philly. Churn also played several Colleges: VA. TECH, William & Mary and Old Dominion University, Richmond, and VCU. Churn was also invited to play for the annual Hampton Bay Days, The Chesapeake Jubilee. We were able to play @ some really great places over the years here at home: King's Head Inn ( everyone played there - Red Hot Chili Peppers for one! I wish I could open it back up$$$), Lewis's ( same goes for this place - everyone that came thru played here - Dave Matthews Band, Nova Mob, Dead Milkmen, to many to list), The Corner ( same here - the likes of The Flaming Lips, GWAR, Minor Threat...), Cogan's ( one of the last cool places we had - and yes that had to close down! **correction - NOW it is a Pizza restuarant - a really good one at that), Friar Tucks, 4400 Club, Planet 9, Zig Zag, The Abyss, Cafe Loco, Rte.44, Jewish Mother ( at least they are still there), The Boathouse (miss that place too), The Dome, and several shows at The Iroquois in Roanoke Virginia, The Atlantic Beach Club and The PIT in Nags Head-NC and a couple of Christmas Parties for Wave Riding Vehicles + Hotline Surfboards (@ Peabody's), etc... Churn received many good review over the years but our biggest was for our very first CD, "Lo Fi Kareoke Night", in Alternative Press. Churn's manager Jamie Blood, back in the day worked for Red distribution. Jamie helped us alot with contacts for booking over the years. Churn got alot of support from 96X (WROX FM - local radio station) - especially from Kristi M., Nick P. and Mike P. And Bill Bass back in the day.! A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU GUYS! Also, A GREAT BIG "THANK YOU" to Rick M. @ The Norva - for giving us such a good show to play ((THE STROKES)). Churn was also sponsored by "Red Bull" from 1999-2002. Although, Scott was the only one who really would drink it! Churn's last 1 month tour (2002), featured shows in NY ( CBGB, MEOW MIX, CONTINENTAL ROOM) + BOSTON ( MIDDLE EAST CAFE - performance was broadcasted live over internet that night - show was so much fun- due to a big crowd and everyone dancing along), CLEVELAND ( BEACHLAND BALLROOM ) + CHICAGO ( ABBEY'S PUB + EMPTY BOTTLE and SCHUBA'S), D.C. ( BLACK CAT + in-store TOWER RECORDS), PHILLY ( PONTIAC GRILL + THE FIRE + REX'S ), DETROIT ( OLD MIAMI), INDIANA ( THE MELODY INN), COLUMBUS,OH ( HI-FIVES) + CINCY,OH ( SUDSY MALONES). Now life has happened and we now have families and crazy jobs! It has slowed us down, BUT Churn is still refusing to grow up and by doing so, we hope to keep playing or many years to come!
