About Me
Imagine a train leaves Los Angeles heading for San Francisco, loaded with your favorite LP’s , and at the same time, a train leaves San Francisco for Los Angeles, carrying your high school A/V department library of Apollo moon mission documentaries , and through some serendipidous quirk of physics the two collide, when they finally pull the body from the twisted wreckage you will have the futuristic baroque pop of Matt McKenna. When confronted with this nightmarish high school algebra brain twister, McKenna speculates that the real Q factor may have come through osmosis, or perhaps it was just in the water, citing his earliest memories which include sitting on a baby blanket outside his family’s home in the London suburb of Weybridge as the psychedelic Rolls Royces of British Invasion royalty rolled past.
British born and Texas bred, Matt cut his teeth in the musical hotbed of Los Angeles, California, fronting the band Echoback, whose self-produced CD “PAPER SPACESHIPS YOU CAN FLY†was no stranger to accolades from the press (“a cornicopia of coolnessâ€- MAGNET). Their outstanding reviews in national, local press and industry trades (Album Network, Virtually Alternative, Bam, Mean Street, Option, Campus Circle) as well as placement on a slew of national and regional compilation CDs included them in the company of such heavy hitters as PJ Harvey, Elliot Smith, Foo Fighters, Fatboy Slim, Lit, and Tori Amos. Matt and his bandmates backed this up with airplay on no fewer than two dozen commercial alternative stations including Live 105 (San Francisco),WFNX (Boston), and KLBJ (Austin). A singer, multi-instrumentalist, programmer and cut junkie, Matt treats his work as a vehicle to weave the non-sequiter into hook laden modern pop so honest and obvious it leaves you scratching your head and wondering, “Why didn’t I think of that?â€
Most recently Matt has been composing and playing sessions for Film, TV and Video Games as well as performing with Paul McCartney band member Rusty Anderson.
