Ten seasons of flat landings will probably give you fifty years of arthritic knees and hips, but it’ll also give you something to look back upon as an old coot and smile. None of the other wraiths in the nursing home will know the feeling of burying a heel side turn at fifty mph or of spinning a backside 180 over a natural hip into a perfect landing. They’ll never know the strange, lucky feeling of getting first chair, nor will they know the religious relief you get when you catch an edge at speed, and then somehow get your board back under you and emerge unscathed. Their joints might hurt less, but their souls will hurt more. They never got to be a snowboarder. You did.
This is the winter you’re going to do it. You’re going to step on a snowboard for the first time, drop in to your first half pipe, ride rails, stomp your first 9, ride three feet of fresh powder, take your first heli-run, ollie that stump, jib that picnic table, win the US Open, get down a run without falling, take tight tree runs, ride 100 days, figure out how the hell to get off the chairlift without grabbing the person next to you. Here’s to the best season of your life.
