About Me

Adam Armstrong graduated from Sydney’s N.S.W. Conservatorium of Music (Jazz Studies) in 1984 and quickly became one of Australia’s most in-demand bassists. In 2000, with the assistance of an Australian Arts Council, Adam relocated to New York to further his artistic development. He has played with such greats as Kenny Kirkland, Kenny Wheeler, Maria Schneider and drumming legend Billy Cobham. Some of his current musical situations include the group Meta-Four, led by saxophonist Eric Person (formerly of the Dave Holland band, World Saxophone Quartet, Chico Hamilton), the Finger Band, led by German drummer Christian Finger, and a quartet led by Danish saxophonist Kim Bock. He has played with many other notable musicians including saxophonist Rich Perry (Village Vanguard band, Maria Schneider), drummer Ari Hoenig (Kenny Werner trio, Wayne Krantz), Ben Monder, Pete McCann, and George Schuller and with the joint project of "punk-jazz" group, "Gutbucket" and new-music string quartet, "Ethel". He has performed at many notable venues, including The Knitting Factory, Cornelia Street Café, Joe’s Pub and the famous Blue Note.International performances have included tours of Europe, Russia, China, Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia. His work has been heard at jazz festivals around the world, including all of the major jazz festivals in Australia; the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague; the Montreux Jazz Festival; Festival de Jazz de Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain; the Aarhus International and Helsingor Winter Jazz Festivals, Denmark; the Dusseldorf Jazz Rally; the Montreal International Jazz Festival; the Trienalle Festival in Koln; the Chicago Humanities Festival; New York’s J&R and JVC Festivals; The Tri-C International Jazz Festival in Cleveland and the Festival Internacional Cervantino, in Guanajuato and Mexico City, Mexico.Adam appears on over 70 albums, including two ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Award) winners. He has played on the soundtracks of numerous feature films and has given master classes and workshops at institutions around the world.Adam also plays in the band "Cold River" - www.myspace.com/coldrivermusic , and in the projects of singer-songwriters Dana LaCroix and KP Devlin. He is the father of two lovely munchkins, Matilda and Gabriel, and plays in the popular kids band AudraRox - audrarox.com * AudraRox's song "Hope My Mama Says Yes!" (co-written by Adam) is being featured on the current season of "Jack's Big Music Show" on Nickelodeon's NOGGIN channel, and their "green" song, "Best Friends (Forever)", (video below) written by Adam, is being featured on up-coming episodes and DVDs of the legendary kids TV program, Sesame Street.
