DJ Slim

About Me

Raised in Merseyside until the age of nine, and then Stoke on Trent, Slim was brought up on music. His mother loved music and loved to sing and his father was a DJ in the 70's so it was already in his genes.
Not knowing what he wanted to do when he left school, Slim enrolled at college doing a diploma in music to pass the time. This is where he met Paul Derbyshire aka “Derb” and the two became very good friends. Derb introduced Slim to the art of DJ-ing, and at the age of 17 Slim purchased his first set of decks from Derb. They were a set of Numark TT1700 belt drive, but were brilliant for a beginner.
After Slim left college he kept in touch with Derb and they both ended up as house mates when Derb got together with a good friend of Slims, Melodie who went to high school with Slim. While they were house mates they played many parties, mainly of friends and family and Slim continued to progress by practicing hard but having lots of fun.
In 2001 Slim got a job as a barman at one of the oldest night clubs in Europe, The Place Nightclub. While at The Place he was promoted to bar supervisor and then bar manager which was when he got his first chance. The DJ who played in the basement didn’t turn up so the General Manager “Dudley”, knowing Slim could do it asked him to step in. He didn’t have to ask twice. From then on Slim made regular appearances at one of the best night clubs of its time.
A year or so on, Slim managed to secure permanent residencies at “The Tube” playing sets which were compared with the likes of “Roger Sanchez” (when he played at “The Void”) and a regular Thursday playing along side a Stoke on Trent legend “Trevor Malloy” at another popular night spot “Fluid”.
After moving out, Slim and Derb started doing there own projects. In late 2002 Slim started a monthly event with another friend “Trev” at a Revolution bar in Hanley town centre. The night was called “FLAWLESS” which showcased local talent including DJs, vocalists and dancers. Regulars saw the likes of Hayley Mitchell the vocalist from the Manchester based band “Dead Wasps”, Sheffield’s DJ Ian Wright and Slim’s good pal “Derb”. The nights were a success with almost every event filling the venue to capacity, and other events followed such as “VODFUSION” and “ILL BEATS” which were both as successful as “FLAWLESS”.
With a string of successful events and worthy residencies under his belt, Slim decided to take a break from running events and DJ-ing for a while. In this time he enrolled at Staffordshire University to study Music Technology with Management. This is where he really found a passion, a passion for producing. While at university he learned how to use various pieces of music hardware equipment in and around the studios and how to use pc software, including Reason, Ableton and Cubase amongst other applications.
In April 2007 Slim was required to put on an event within a group as a module assignment. This would be a fairly simple task as he had done events and promotions in the past. This was how “STOKE-E” was born. STOKE-E was another night showcasing local talent, but this time bands and artists were included. The event took place at one of the best clubs in the midlands “Satchmos” in Hanley town centre. This event featured the bands Morning Sparks, CODA, 5TH Action and DJs Ben Jones, Eddie Wade, Beatroot, Yorkie P, Derb and of course himself. It was another success, not just for Slim but for the whole team involved.
Since STOKE-E, Slim has concentrated more on producing and has recently finished work on three tracks. Two of which are remixes, one is a remix of CODA’s “For Alex” and the other being a remix of Morning Sparks’ “Green Bottle Liquor”. The third track is an original piece called “Issues” which is not of Slims “normal” style but of a more uplifting euphoric style. There are also plenty more tracks on the way, all of which are varied styles as Slim attempts to appeal to a wide range of listeners. These range from techno sounds to the dark depths of dub step.

Burial:Untrue Review

Unlike Burial's self titled debut album, Untrue sees the introduction of a lot more vocal snippets with an angst-ridden urban aura that piles up concrete beats and hoses them down with washes of synth...
