The urban/R&B songstress Toi is an up and coming singer/songwriter who offers a unique sound unlike any before her. Her smooth yet, raspy tone delivers a refreshing sound to the overly saturated bubble gum pop industry of R&B today. Innovative and ready to try new things, Toi is not a follower in terms of writing like the most popular songwriter or singing like other artists before her. She is ready to make her own stamp on the industry by bringing with her the values and talent that has been deeply rooted into her since she was a youngster. Originating from Jamaica, Queens NY, Toi has grown up listening to many gospel choirs and singers whose main focuses were to make others feel what they felt while singing about something that they loved. Her grandparents owned a church in the heart of Queens where they still pastor today. With her grandfather as Bishop and her grandmother as head pastor, morals have been instilled into this talented young lady from a very young age. It was at that time when she learned that music was one of the best forms of communication where she could express love, joy, heartache and pain. The emotions she felt from listening to the likes of Shirley Caesar and the Clark Sisters made Toi want to experience the gift of music for herself. She began singing, leading choirs and arranging their music and harmonies at the young age of 12 while working on new songs with her uncles and mother who played the organ and also sang. As she grew into a talented young lady, she was introduced to hip hop and R&B by her mother’s husband who was a DJ. He showed her the beauty of R&B music and how today's artists are influenced by leaders of the old school. Toi has always been anxious to follow the footsteps of the great artists before her time which included Patti Labelle, Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald, Toni Braxton, Mariah Carey, Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston, Kim Burell, Faith Evans and many more. With a young, sexy, sultry and soulful sound, Toi is undeniably a singer who will be identifiable amongst any other R&B singer around. In 2005, Toi toured with a girl group by the name of Honey that opened for Yolanda Adams, Regina Bell, Lyfe Jennings and also introduced Eva from America's Next Top Model. The ladies of Honey disassembled later on that year due to dissimilar interests but it did not stop Toi from continuing to follow her dream that had long been in pursuit before the days of Honey. Today, she continues to follow her dream by singing, writing music and referencing in studios around the tri-state area. Toi has a gift of writing her music melodically while leaving a lasting impression on the listeners. Her soulful roots come through as her melodies and arrangements captivate her audience while she delivers soulful and emotional performances. Fun, humorous, energetic, and full of life is what close friends and family would describe her as. Her humble and gracious attitude makes her a joy to work with and her ability to learn quickly and pick up useful skills from others makes one wonder what she will come up with next. Toi is on a mission to bring the soul back to R&B while staying young and fresh.
